can a GTX 980 do bit coin mining or will 1 bit coin take 5 years 24/7? just wondering because its basically $450 for free

Nope, unless you have dedicated hardware ASICs, have free power, or somehow find a good altcoin, it isn't worth it.

My i5 6500 is bad and can't even maintain 4.5ghz, and 4.4ghz causes it to slowly become unstable over weeks with a vcore of 1.395. FML

You cannot use a graphics card to mine BitCoin.

 

It's not profitable unless you don't pay the power bill.

Costs more in power bills than you will make in BitCoin.

But still. Don't do it.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

I advise you don't say your age on the internet and I think that is against the CoC, but it would probably take just less than a year to get, maybe, -50 dollars because of power usage.
