Hey guys,

If you are making a skylake gaming pc right now as of January 11th 2016 & want to game at 1440p would you go for a Gtx 970 or a Amd 390?

I believe the fastest 390 at the moment is the gigabyte g1 gaming r9 390 & the fastest Gtx 970 is the gigabyte gtx 970 xtreme (new one that came out).

Which one would your personally go with? Biggest reason as to why would be appreciated to!

The build:

Intel i7 6700k

Asus ROG Maximus VIII Impact Mini-Itx

Corsair Carbide air 240

16gb kingston ram

corsair h100i gtx cpu cooler

EVGA 650W G2

GPU: ?

The things i really do often on my machine are the following:

-Autocad

-Engineering work with massive images which need editing

-A-lot of engineering work (mechanical engineering)

-Games: I'm a huge FPS & MMORPG fan.  examples)  World of warcraft, black desert, tera, bf3, bf4, bf hardline, black ops 3

-A-lot of web surfing

I really like the power efficiency of the gtx 970 etc ... but every time i try to click "buy" on a gtx 970 my heads like:  but the 390 has 8gb more vram and it's more future proof, wth are you doing spending the same amount on a less future type card that costs the same/more.

I also like RED LED LOGO'S which can be changed on the gigabyte gtx 970 xtreme version.

If you guys think i should still go for the 390 or 390x, that is less then 280mm in length, then which one has a red led logo?

Thanks.

I have a 970, but if I was to choose again, I would go with the 390. It has double the VRAM and ties the 970 in performance.

I'd grab a i5 6600K and a cheaper mobo and invest the saved money into a 980Ti for a smoother 1440p gaming experience. That's just me though.

To answer your question, the 390 is going to be the better choice at 1440p. MSI and Sapphire have the best models though, Gigabyte is kinda bottom tier for AMD cards.

Dont get the g1 390,it is garbage. If you want a 390,get one from MSI,Sapphire,XFX or Powercolor.I don't know if in your country is the same, but the Xtreme 970 is 30 euros more over the g1 970,i would not pay that premium price, the g1 970 is a good card

Personally I'm in love with the 970 Xtreme (even though I don't have one) about as much as that dude was in love with the coco

The Xtreme is insanely quiet and has a beast stock clock, not the mention it's 8+8(+6) pin power connectors; it's a beast overclocker most of the time.

The g1 is already a good overclocker, and also cool. That's why I would not pay 30 euros more

True, i agree but for that price you can get top of the line 390 with 8gb vram. hmmm

Yeah but with a higher power overhead on the Xtreme I would say it's a better overclocker in theory. I reality I realize it's like how ASUS puts extra pins in their X99 Deluxe mobo socket for a 0.1v advantage over other mobos but most people don't go up to 1.8v anyway. Regardless, RGB.

I wouldn't get a 390 simply because there's no CUDA support and the GeForce experience thingy is also worth it imo. My GPU is 3 GB and that's plently for even running BF4 at ultra settings. I would say that 8 gb isn't necessary.

But for the same price point, do you agree that the 390 completely & massively future proofs you vs gigabyte's gtx 970 xtreme?

Simply due to 8gb vram.

Why is the g1 390 garbage?

Gigabyte aftermarket coolers are not much better then the reference designs that they would of used. They are some of the worst coolers. If you want a good R9 390 go with MSI or Sapphire

Could snag a i5-6500 and a MSI Z170 PC MATE and OC to 4.3-4.5Ghz using BCLK

No. It's completely and massively not "future proof".

BCLK is a totally different animal to overclock with vs. core ratio. You probably already know this, overclocking it can fuck shit up. Not to mention the ratio can be unlocked via a BIOS update.

In skylake it is actually quite easy, yeah it is different from core ratio though look at Digital Foundry for example, they got a i5-6500 to I think 4.5Ghz and they got a i3-6100 to 4.4Ghz. They had to lower there RAM speed which was at 2666mhz ( They've proven time and time that RAM speed does effect FPS, 2133 vs 2666 is like a 10FPS difference ) a small bit. Like 40mhz if that.

It's not for video games but personally it's nice since I use Adobe

VRAM (not VRM) is really only good for playing games with high texture resolutions since it's used to store the textures. What's more important is the GPU itself which does all the rendering.

And AMD has OpenCL, so its irrelevant to his request.
