Hey guys, I have an idea that seems really good...

I have a shit ton of tech that was upgraded from lying around (Define R4, 2 G3258's, etc.)

I was also thinking of selling my Macbook Air for ~$550. After selling everything besides my desktop and a few things, I will theoretically have close to $2500. I would also sell my current monitor.

With the money, I would get an Acer X34 Predator (hopefully those will go down) and a Razer Blade Stealth (if it doesn't suck like Razer's peripherals.)

So.....

Is this too risky? Or am I better off to compromise and keep my monitor/laptop and just get an Ultrawide to mount above my 27" for editing? The main thing that I want is a video editing AND gaming monitor in one package (I'm starting professional video work for people in the coming months.) Yes, I could buy all of this stuff after seeing two or three clients, but I don't want to waste my money.

TL;DR

I want to know if there is any flaw in selling old peripherals, my MacBook, and current monitor for a Razer Blade Stealth for school and mobile editing + an Acer X34 Predator so that I can have more screen real estate.

*I could also get the MSI GS30 (which has a quad core and 16GB of ram, a lesser screen, slightly heavier and thicker, and maintains the capability for a GPU)*

Excuse my ramblings. I just don't want to have sold everything for bad prices and end up losing excessive amounts money (I'll use the Classfields)

Thanks - Covert.

Well, you'll never get what you put into it. So there's that to consider.

I wouldn't go with the Razer laptop. It's nice, but that one that Linus was teased with in the Asus booth seems like a far better machine.

Plus it likely won't have the Razer tax attached to it.

The price of the monitor won't drop that quickly. You could wait to see if Asus's ultrawide pushes it down, but who knows. None of us can tell the future. ;)

If you're not using the other stuff...I'd just sell it while you can. It'll only continue to depreciate at a rapid rate.

I'll get all of my money back very quickly. I'll start off with my family members, I'll get about $5000 all in for advertising their practices for them. I really don't know if I can trust Asus anymore, their monitors and laptops have always been troublesome for me. I guess selling my old keyboards and monitors now can't hurt, can it? I don't have any i5's xD

I think you may have misunderstood what I meant by setup. I am wondering if it would be wise to sell my old peripherals, my laptop, and my monitor for an Acer X34 Predator (large, IPS, and high refresh rate) as well as a portable, powerful laptop.

I do believe you've jumped the gun ;)

That's not at all what he's looking to do.

I meant of the parts you've already purchased ;)

For professional work there are nicer monitors. I'd check to see which monitor, LG or Acer, has better color reproduction.

I have a feeling it'll be the LG, with the Acer leaning more towards gaming. Who knows though! Dell has an ultrawide that goes pretty cheap as well, and they're generally quite nice.

Nah. Don't hold onto that stuff. Even my dad is starting to let go of his massive collection of hardware.

If you're using it for work, I think color correctness should come before fun time.

Well the monitor I suggested already has large IPS and high refresh rate and is under $700. If you do a lot of editing this system wil suite you well and it's also under $2500.

I'll never use Adobe RGB, and the Acer claims 100% sRGB. Any IPS panel will be an upgrade as I am starting to finally notice the drawbacks to TN now.

I already have a very similar desktop. My current monitor is identical to the PG278Q, minus G-Sync. I need an IPS display.

Touche!

I have a buddy that does semi professional photography work on a TN panel. I've often wondered how he manages.

Mind you, he's also color blind...so I guess it's a rather moot point.

I have a feeling there are better laptops than the Razer though. I just don't know any off the top of my head, as I've only ever been interested in ultra portable slim-as-can-be machines.

Not a huge fan of the design...it looks...chunky. Deceptively light though, which would be a huge plus.

It's made of plastic, no? I'd try and get hands on with one before purchasing. Nothing's worse than paying that kind of money for something that feels cheap in hand.

How much do people want for the machine and dock sans video card? The one he's including is laughable, yet he quotes the price as $500.

Seems like he might be trying to rope in an uneducated buyer.

I'd offer him $1350-$1400. He added another SSD and a GPU. The laptop and dock without GPU and extra drive costs about $1300.

If he says no, I'd keep an eye on this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-GS30-Shadow-With-Dock-Intel-Core-i7-4870HQ-2-50-GHz-16-GB-256-GB-SSD-/272100132030?hash=item3f5a6e84be:g:0CAAAOSwT~9WkYKJ

Honestly, if you sell the 2 128GB SSD's and bought 2 of the ones he has it might work out to be cheaper. The 7870 isn't really worth much at all. I paid the equivalent of $45 USD for a 7970.
