What is the CPU cache used for, I know that having more seems to be more expensive (And better?)

 

This is coming from a video editors perspective.

Basically it makes the CPU process data faster. It works in conjunction with RAM

i think linus described it like this

 

if the CPU is a worker building something

Cach-what's in their hands

RAM-what's on their toolbelt

Storage-The hardware store 

 

its all about how fast the CPU can access commonly used data

@Dobbsjr Yes, I do - there wasn't anything helpful that I could find other than it stores data in a way faster than RAM does. - but how can more be helpful in a video editing senario, because a clip or premiere won't fit on 12MB of cache!

? Well you might need more RAM if anything not Cache

the CPU cache is a temp store location for the ALU to crunch data

 

swapping from RAM and even HDD/SSD is still too slow for the ALU

 

so cache is the fastest because it the same speed as the CPU itself

 

in terms of memory speed

 

Cache >> RAM >> SSD >> HDD >> CD-ROM
