Should I use the stock cooler?

Daringpear

My friend has an 860k and he said that his was throttling with the stock cooler, so he bought a hyper 212 evo and his temps are fine

Why would they include a cooler if it wasn't sufficient enough to cool the CPU?

The stock CPU cooler is one of the best coolers you can get for free.

if it wouldn't be sufficient it would not come with the cpu. think about it.

Athlons wont throttle with the stock cooler.

He may have a slight OC.

I'm thinking of buying an Athlon X4 860K for my new build. Is the stock cooler sufficient for running at stock speeds? Should I bother investing in another cooler (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cryorig-cpu-cooler-c7)

why are you picking a athlon?

If you:

  1. Want decent headroom for moderate overclocking
  2. Wish to keep the noise levels to moderate-low instead of high-very high
  3. Want something even somewhat more aesthetically pleasing than stock

then yes. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

He ran it at stock speeds. It's always best to pick up an aftermarket cooler. Considering the hyper 212 evo is only $20, it's worth it.

Well, its not.

With any after market cooler, you are about to possibly run into A LOT of issues.

I've seen far more after market coolers failing or coming DOA than stock ones.

That's if you don't put it on wrong. Getting a DOA aftermarket cooler is very unlikely, which usually occurs in AIO liquid cooling

No, the most common dead cooler I've seen has been the Cooler Master Hyper 212+

About 55% of them were DOA.
