Which CPU Will Perform Better? i7-4790 or i5-4670K Overclocked

I have the opportunity to swap out my overclocked i5-4670k for an i7-4790. Will the i7 perform much better? Keep in mind, this is a locked i7.

Depends on what. In most games overclocked i5 would still be ahead. In rendering or video editing i7 would get a small advantage.

Well. The latest games all seem to scale well with more cores/threads. Really depends on what you do and the games you play.

Obvious answer is a clear "It depends". For rendering etc everything multithreaded you are likely to see performance increases with the i7. Everything with 4 threads and less should give the i5 an edge since it will have better performance per core.

Depends on the clock of the i5. Also keep in mind game are now starting to use the extra threads on the i7

my i5 is overclocked to 4.5 on the core and 4.4 on the cache ratio

it beats 4690k in new games

Agreed, Witcher 3 is the first example I can think of that runs much bette on i7 vs i5. Admittedly theyre still rare, but they will become more common place

Even OCed to 4.5, the 4690K falls to the i7 4770 which starts off at 3.8? HT makes a difference.

I didn't care about which CPU is faster, but I don't like short comments without explenations, especially not when there are so many people that go in a different direction than you.

I feel like a lot of people won't read your suggestion or opinion if you don't explain it from the beginning on, but I want that they read it, because your point is actually really good.

It really depends on the application.

For example, there are many games (most of them!), who will run better with more Core Clock. because they dont really use hyper Threading that much.

 

And then there is Watchdogs....

It doesnt fucking Care if your CPU has 3,5 Ghz, or 4,4 Ghz. Exact same fps.

But put a 3,5 Ghz i7 with HT in it, and bam, 21% more fps (at 1080p resolution, so not unrealistic!), than an 4,4 Ghz i7 with disabled HyperThreading.

 

You can clock your i5 down to the i7 level, and see if ANYTHING you have/use runs noticable slower. If the performance is exactly the same.. You might switch because you dont benefit that much from core speed, but HyperThreading might benefit you.

 

But... Both should be at veeery similar levels. I doubt you will really notice the switch
