How do we know where the communities folding power goes?

How do we know really? Has anyone ever explained how computers can help gene folding? I have been searching and have not found any proof that gene folding helps cancer.

 

 

 

How do we know that the government already has the cures for all the types of cancer that the gene folding companies say they will cure with the computer power and are just releasing them little by little and saying that gene folding helped tremendously? And that the government are partnered with stanford and paying stanford to say that they own it? And you may ask what is the US doing with that power? It doesnt matter, they could be using it for anything they want... hacking china... anything... ANYTHING

What makes more sense.

A government already has a cure to everything and is just peace mealing it out, while covering up the fact they are by hiring an institute to do it.

Or...

An institute short on cash is asking people for use of processing power to help decode gene sequences, to HELP find a cure.

They probably already have the cure and keep it restricted since the treatments are more lucrative.  Meanwhile "folding" power goes to help NSA crack our encryption and ruin our privacy.

I have to admit, I've never thought of it like that.

We really don't know if anything we're doing is actually  helping cancer research other than Stanford telling us so. All that processing power could be used for anything, and we're ready to strip our pockets and rise our electricity bills for a cause that might be a big hoax.

FYI, Folding@home aims to cure cancer as well as other diseases. That involves learning all the mechanics behind protein folding. They won't say "HEY! WE'RE CURING CANCER!" because they're not inherently doing that. That is the goal but they're also learning how protein folding and biology work as a whole.

Your right. But you forget there is a mid ground between proven and not proven. And that is called "we dont know." I dont think the op is ACTUALLY trying to prove that the US government is using our folding power, i think its to prove a point that we dont actually know where its going. It could be going to cancer research, to the US government, to power a hyper intelligent AI, it could be going no where, hell it could even be going up a magical unicorns bum for all we know! To that end I think the op has proved his actual point, that we shouldn't just assume that it IS going to cancer research when we have this "lack of evidence" that even you acknowledged exists. There should be at least some demand for proof that our computing power is being used for what they say it is before we fork over all our money into big rigs and power bills.

Pretty much everything in life is something we "don't know".  All we can do is collect evidence and theorize based on the most probably and logical result.
