4790k is better in every way

but.. if you only game, i7 isn't worth the extra money, since there is little difference in most games with i5

The 4790k has the stronger performance. It's hyperthreaded, whereas the i5 is not. On top of that a single dye shrink and architecture revamp aren't going to be enough to make up for the extra performance that hyperthreading allows use of. Hyperthreading is explained by Linus here:

However, as the posts above state, it's not worth the extra cost if you're just gaming.

Spoiler

CPU: AMD 5800X

GPU: Gigabyte Aorus 3070 Ti

SSD: WD SN850X 4TB x2

MoBo: Gigabyte Aorus Master B550

Case: Fractal Torrent

PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 750W

The 4790K performs better in video editing and such tasks. And also in gaming.

If you wanna go for 4K gaming I think an i7 would benefit you more. And the little price-jump from an i5 to an i7 won't be a problem if you're investing in a 4K machine I think.

Yes, but I doubt your GPU is unless you have 2 high-end cards, as 4K is more of a GPU dependent change over a CPU change.

However, if you're putting two high-end GPUs in a computer, you really should put an i7 in it, as that small of a price jump isn't going to make as big a difference as a nice 4K monitor over a 1440p monitor. Or even two 980Ti-class GPUs over a single 970-class GPU.

Easily, it doesn't bottleneck two overclocked 980Ti's.

yes, but if you can't decide between those two,

perfect choice for you is Xeon

E3-1231 V3 or V5

it's hyperthreaded, same price as K i5, power of a stock i7

it just can't be overclocked and has no iGPU

Additional note:

V5 Xeons must be used on a C23x board, as they're locked out of Z/H/B boards on skylake.

Because everyone was buying the Xeon E3 1231v3 instead of the 4770/4790k. ^-^

Just get a 4790k, its better to have more then just you need. It helps alot in streaming!

omg...

Yep.

Luckily, MSI and Asus are taking it upon themselves to make Gaming boards for the C chipset so we can use the v5s.

Digital Foundry has used a 6600k Overclocked to 4.9GHz and a 4790k at stock speed kicked it's ass in gaming.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
