Nvidia 3D Vision in 2016

Dredgy

3D has been around for a long while now, and has never seen much adoption in the PC world, and it's one of the staples of my system. So I did a bit of a review of it, all of my thoughts should be documented below, plus feel free to watch the accompanying video because it's less reading and it was annoyingly difficult to make.

So to run 3D you need a nVidia certified monitor that can run at 120 Hertz and an additional 3D Vision 2 Kit. This is quite expensive and is really the biggest con, since you can't use lower refresh rate IPS panels, so when you're not using 3D you're sacrificing the color accuracy, contrast ratios and viewing angles that a similarly priced IPS panel would offer. Since my biggest use case for 3D is movies, I would be perfectly happy with a 60FPS monitor that can only push 30Hz to each eye for a movie.

That said, gaming is pretty damn incredible. Immersion is great, especially in surround and compatibility is pretty damn good, though apparently recent titles may require community mods to be working properly. It's not so much things popping out at you, but rather looking through a window at another world instead of at a screen.

Cyberlink PowerDVD also does a really surprisingly good job at converting 2D content to 3D content if the source is high definition.

The glasses are comfortable, and work well. It's easy to set up but has a habit of turning itself off (or reverting to anaglyph red-and-blue 3D) if you don't turn the glasses on BEFORE you launch the game/movie. Some flickering is noticeable if you have lights on close to your PC due to the nature of active shutter technology.

The 3D effect is really worth it though, especially if you're already buying a high refresh rate monitor. But it is hard to justify buying a high refresh rate monitor just for 3D, because while it is great, you don't want to use it all the time, and therefore it's probably not the most important aspect of your monitor. So therefore all monitors should be 120 Hertz (or the threshold lowered to like 80Hz or something), and at the way display technology is advancing right now, hopefully that will mean a lot more high refresh rate VA-IPS panels on the way.

In short, love the technology, wish I could use it with a different monitor.

Personally I always found 3d to be little more than a gimmick, and frankly I never thought it helped my immersion in movies. Add the extra cost and being bound to nvidia cards, and I just don't see the point.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

It's never felt gimmicky to me (unless the entire experience is built around 3D and has nothing else to offer *coughAvatarcough*). But I often hear that which is why I looked into it, and I found it to be really solid and polished technology with a software implementation that could do with a little work.

No headaches or anything of the sort either.

Immersion is particularly pronounced in gaming - Hitman feels like a completely different game with 3D enabled, and gameplay in Dirt feels alot better. I don't really game often, but when I do, I find it's worth the effort to do it in 3D and Surround, as it makes it more of a savourable experience.

Spending the extra on the kit, is stupid. It needs to be ubiquitous to every monitor, so that you aren't going out of you way to use it. AMD has a competing technology, but no idea what it's like (it allows for lower refresh rates though I think). Should be fine for movies, but from everything I've heard, nVidia is far superior.

I'm a year and a half in and use it about every 4-5 weeks. Probably not worth it, but I enjoy using it too much to give it up.

Then I look like an alien in real life.

Though I had a bad key on the green screen, so the colour is a fair bit off.

No i think it was because of the greenish tint given off by probably the green screen.

But nice shots and stills :D.

For me to get a clean key I had to color correct a bit, that's actually a purple shirt I'm wearing. It's annoying, I'm usually the green screen expert, but I'm having a lot trouble with my new camera.

But glad you enjoyed :)

When was the last time you used it? It's got noticeably better than I when I first bought it, but it might have just been an increase in compatibility in the games I was playing.
