Depends what OS you're using, the file system and if you're running any apps on it.

For FreeNAS using ZFS, you need 8GB minimum, but for a light, simple NAS, 2GB should be enough.

I read on one of the Sun, now Oracle, Solaris pages that ZFS works best with 1GB of RAM for every 1TB of storage. That was included using some of the advanced ZFS features including deduplication. Right now I have 10 x 2TB with 4GB of ECC RAM but plan to at least double it as soon as possible.

Depends on the NAS Front end. General networked Windows/RAID req's would be minimum 4GB, something like FreeNAS and you'll want 8GB per their rec's

I was running OpenMediaVault on a Pentium 4 with a gig of RAM... Now I'm running Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Q6600 with 4 gigs of RAM and it's like a match made in heaven (other than the drive for the OS being a slow and beat to death drive).

Oh god, that elitist crap? You can ignore most of the "requirements" you'll get if you ever read or visit any part of the FreeNAS forum. It's members (including mods) seem to forget that FreeNAS was originally designed to run on old hardware people had lying around in order to avoid the cost of a server running something like Windows 2012.

4-8gb minimum depending on how many drives/what capacities they are. You can get by with 4 most likely, but if you're going to be buying a new system 8gb is only like $15 more.

No it is just general specifications.

What? I don't even use freeNAS it's just a suggestion.

Depends on what filesystem you use. For zfs, 8gb of ram at the very least +1gb for each tb of storage.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

Depends on the config you'll be running. Apparently both ZFS and RAID are options.

They have a Req sheet: http://www.zoonsweb.nl/wiki/doku.php?id=documentation:setup_and_user_guide:hardware_requirements

I assumed you were linking this crap: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/hardware-recommendations-read-this-first.23069/ My bad.

I've been running my server now for 6 months with 14tb of storage and only 8gb of ram just fine.

holy hell... "these motherboards use too much power"

i have my prebuilt running euro truck sim 2 at 60fps (settings way down for idling offcourse) pulling 50 watts from the wall... what the hell does this guy pay for his power that that half a watt total difference matters...

He's an elitist asshole; the FreeNAS forums are full of them.

I don't know how to do much other than the basics with my FreeNAS server. So whenever I run into a problem I make a post on the FreeNAS forums, and of course since I don't know much I don't know what information to include. And every single post I've made I've basically been ridiculed for one thing or another until someone helpful eventually shows up.

FreeNAS can run perfectly fine on 10 year old hardware, yet he's sitting there recommending expensive hardware and server grade boards and such. Which is fine in its own right -- but he should also be mentioning that FreeNAS can run perfectly fine on something as cheap as a simple Celeron/Pentium+H81 board+8gb non-ECC ram.

i know a guy that based on that post is pretty much the same as that guy. he keeps repeating linus is a sellout and his content sucks, and thanks to wendell's facepalming about the USA's low data caps is now convinced that the cheapest internet plan available in belgium should allow for 10TB of traffic monthly.
