What socket is future-proof?

Go to solution Solved by harrynowl,

What do you mean by future proof? In terms of support from Intel? A typical life span is 2 generations.

Both current platforms (LGA1151 and LGA2011-3) should see 1 more CPU before we get a new platform.

Outgoing or EOL (End of Life) platforms like LGA1150 will be available for a few more months.

But hardware like drives, graphics cards and peripherals will support it for a long while unless a drastic standard change occurs (i.e. going from the old IDE/PATA type to SATA). RAM upgrades are usually available as well, you can still easily buy DDR2.

We're getting off track here.

Since Intel has the superior performance-per-core, it shouldn't matter who's been on the same socket the longest.

the question doesn't ask about cpus your off topic.. its asking about sockets... and its not like it actually matters the performance you get scales pretty well for how much you pay...

If you read the OP, they said they have an LGA 1150 motherboard. Why would they even want to switch to the AMD platform? I'm not the one off topic, lol.

Each Intel socket supports a Tick and Tock. After that a new socket is introduced. So for socket 2011-3 that will be Haswell-E and Broadwell-E. Skylake-E will use a new socket.

On socket 1151 that's Skylake, follow by Cannonlake. And Kabylake will run on a new socket.

Intel Xeon E5 1650 v3 @ 3.5GHz 6C:12T / CM212 Evo / Asus X99 Deluxe / 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 3000 Trident-Z / Samsung 850 Pro 256GB / Intel 335 240GB / WD Red 2 & 3TB / Antec 850w / RTX 2070 / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy X360 15: Intel Core i5 8250U @ 1.6GHz 4C:8T / 8GB DDR4 / Intel UHD620 + Nvidia GeForce MX150 4GB / Intel 120GB SSD / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy x360 BP series Intel 8th gen

AMD ThreadRipper 2!

Future proof just means he'll be able to use it for a long time. Not a lot of companies say " future proof " but rather the community.

And the community gets it from somewhere, right? Look at Skylake, it offers nothing in the way of longevity over Haswell yet the common rable eat that shit up.

Num, num

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I didn't suggest amd to him anywhere. I was answering a poorly written question with pointless facts, and also how could I say yes 1150 is "future proof" when its already old news(well performing old news that is)... Id say that a future proof socket is am4, and what ever intel names the next socket(kinda 1151, but not if you have 1150 already.)...

I have a i7 4790k at stock for now and I couldn't be happier. In games it doesn't get maxed out I see myself using it for another 2-3 years. In my opinion skylake isn't worth it for the price to performance. Just got for the lga 1150 mo that can overclock . I love my Asus maximus VI

Strangely the probably most future proof socket would be LGA2011-1 for Xeon E7's. Ivy Bridge E7, Haswell E7 both used it and I believe Skylake E7 will keep using it. However good luck buying E7 and its motherboard within your budget.

The most future proof is LGA1151!

How? It will be replaced in two years tops. The 170 will be replaced next year, look at what happened with the Z87.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

There is no such thing mate. Stick with 1150 or look into 1151 or 2011-V3. I'm still rocking 1155 and not noticing any problems what so ever.
