It mostly helps synthetic performance to be honest.

 

If you're just interested in playing games running the default XMP profile for your RAM is all you need to care about :)

 

But tighter timings is all about reducing delay & wait times in between commands. A benchmark that appreciates good RAM timings & frequency is Cinebench R15.
