Skylake + DDR3

Go to solution Solved by Endrius,

DDR3 (~1.5v) will fry the skylake cpu, theres a limit thats like 1.3v-1.4v , i cant remember exactly, but any higher than the "limit" will damage it. if you're going for skylake i recommend DDR4 but DDR3L could work too, i didn't even know ddr3l existed till i saw skylake cpus say that it's supported

The motherboard I have chosen fully supports DDR3 1.5V.  ;) That being said, almost everyone told me to get DDR4. So i guess thats what i will do :) More futureproof  B)

Hello everyone,

Im thinking of upgrading my current amd system to intel based one.
CPU I choose i5 6600k, ive noticed theres some motherboards with ddr3 support (thinking of buying this one >>http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product )

The question is, is it better to get DDR4 2133mhz CL 15 1.2V RAM, or should i stick with with my old DDR3 1600mhz CL9 1.5V Ram?

Is it worth investing more to MB (same asus motherboard with ddr4 support costs around 12 euros more) + also id have to buy new DDR4 (50 more euros ) ram?

Would i get any real benefit by going to DDR4 ? 60 euros is a big difference for me. What should i do? Any advices, tips, etc are welcome icon_e_wink.gif

You would have to use DDR3L and not DDR3 so just buy some DDR4 mate. They aren't a great deal more expensive.

With most of the boards out there, yes. But the D3 variant of Asus Z170-P actually supports the traditional DDR3.

I would just buy DDR4, it is not that expensive, 8gb is at the same price DDR3 was before DDR4 was released.

Ahh cool although most still need DDR3L so I would still recommend going DDR4. Here in the UK at least the prices are quite similar.

newegg doesn't do europe;

buy from caseking or other to avoid massive taxes and shipping problems

Used newegg as an example, i will be buying at my local shop ;) so no additional taxes :)

I could buy DDR4 no problem, but thats + 50 euros for like 1-5 additional FPS in games? looking for real life improvements :P CL 9 1600mhz vs CL 15 2133 mhz (i dont plan on overclocking ram)

Yeah. I hear a lot of CPUs have been bricked by DDR3 in DDR3L boards. :/ I agree about the DDR4. I always go for futureproofing. Intel CPU will easily give four or five years of good use but DDR3 won't anymore.

OP: Here's a good read on the correlation (and the lack thereof) between DRAM speed and CAS latency. There's a crude comparison table too.

Just get DDR4... and be done with it.... instead of going back to DDR3L.

I'd rather go DDR4 and get 1-5 more fps than go back a generation to DDR3.

Must be 1.4v because DDR3L is rated at 1.35v

I would buy ddr4, you could sell the old mobo + cpu and ram if 60 euros is a big difference.
