Cpu not supported by MB model

I already posted something on gpu forum about lag im getting (which i think its bottleneck cause my gpu is weak) but then i found out something else

 

since i put new cpu(phenom ii x4 940) on my mobo(m2n68 am se2), im getting a message on boot which says something like 'Your cpu is not supported by this model of motherboard... Press F1 to continue'

and this is like for almost a year

and now i go to mobo site and check cpu support for motherboard

there was phenom ii x4 945(all stats are same as on 940, same W reqs, same speed, everything) but there wasnt 940 and i remember when i bought the cpu i checked the cpu support list then too but maybe i confused 945 with 940 and didnt payed attention to it

 

so my question is can this cause the lag im getting in games and can it destroy or burn something on my mobo or cpu?

or can it not use full power of the cpu?

 

btw i checked on some forums that support between cpu and mobo depends on power, in this case 125W, this mobo can wear 125W cpus as i saw
so im guessing 940 shouldnt be prob

 

someone tell me if im wrong and what should i do

check if theirs a bios update. This is how I fixed my motherboard when it wouldn't post even when the website said it was supported with my new i5 as the bios update added compatibility for it .

However, that motherboard theoretically does support the processor as the X4 940 is a socket AM2+ processor.

and nowadays its hard to find am2+ mobo with ddr2, if i dont find it, it would cost me a lot of money to switch to ddr3(new ram, new mobo)

The big difference between the Phenon II X4 945 and 940 -- The Phenom II X4 940 is a "Black Edition" CPU with an unlocked multiplier.

The Phenom II X4 945 is a locked chip.

 

The microcode between the two are different, and as mentioned before, the Phenom II X4 940 is not certified on the particular motherboard. As a result, the motherboard outputs a warning.

 

Both are K10 chips, from the "Dragon" platform, and are code-named "Deneb"...but it is the small difference that changes everything.

 

 

What games are you noticing performance dips?

From what I can see, the Radeon HD 6570 is most likely the culprit...but just to be sure.

 

By the way, the Phenom II line of CPUs are capable of handling much higher performing GPU's before it becomes a "bottleneck" effect.

(My Phenom II X6 1090T handled 2~3 HD 5850's and a single HD 7970 with no problems)

 

 

Upgrading the platform to AM3/AM3+ isn't ridiculously expensive. You don't need a $180~$200+ motherboard for a Phenom II X4 -- a FX-8000 or FX-9000 is a different story. Plus, you can snag a 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz / 1866 MHz kit for about $30~$40. Heck, you can even find 16GB kits for as low as $65.

MSi 970 Krait will work too...just trying to keep the price down (seemed like cost was a big concern).

so far my brother tried Watch dogs, GTA V, fallout 4, ac syndicate, nfs rivals, just to mention that battlefield 4 worked just fine and if i remember right ac unity worked fine too

btw i think i mentioned on other thread that i have a laptop hp 355 g2(its worse by performance then this pc), still i tried watch dogs and gta v on laptop and they work fine constantly

and even when i saw the gameplay on pc, those moments without slowdown, they seemed more, much more smoother then on my laptop

just that 2-3 secs is the prob which gets so annoying

im not sure, but should a 95W mobo be a prob for 125W cpu?

btw i think i cant take any am3 mobo since most of am3 mobos are ddr3 if im not mistaken and phenom 940 goes only with ddr2

All AM3 mobos are DDR3 except for a few older ones with both? And yes then you need MSI 970 Gaming if its 125W...

Given that motherboard and the CPU cooling system you have now, I strongly advise that you NOT overclock your Phenom II X4 940 -- to the point it is simply unsafe for YOU and the computer. I am being serious here.

 

 

 

Most (if not all) fully AM3 motherboards will only have DDR3 RAM support. As I mentioned before, DDR3 has come down in price, and will soon be phased out -- reduced production, causing price increase -- and you can get a 8GB (4GB X 2) for as low as $28. Buying a brand new DDR2 4GB (i.e. 2GB X 2) kit is even more expensive.

 

This is why I am encouraging you to actually jump in the AM3/AM3+ platform, and get an inexpensive DDR3 memory kit. Plus, your current ASUS motherboard only supports a maximum of 4GB (2GB X 2) anyways.

 

DDR3 RAM support was one of the key highlights with AM3 on the new (at the time) 890FX chipset -- it was the new technology trend, exactly like DDR4 now at the present time.

 

 

 

The Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DQ6 is a very nice motherboard -- especially back during its debut.

It uses the top tier 790FX chipset available (790FX followed by 790X, 790GX, etc, etc); this chipset is intended for overclocking and using multiple graphics cards.

That is why there is proper cooling over the 8+2 VRM's (the big copper heatsink + heatpipe), and serveral PCI-Express X16 expansion slots.

 

You probably won't be able to find it brand new in stores anymore, though; the 700 series chipset is already two (almost three) generations old now.

The 790FX has already been replaced by the 890FX, and the 990FX.

The Phenom II X4 940 is, for sure, a "Black Edition" Processor.

Windows or the motherboard BIOS will not indicate this -- though the CPU multiplier option will become available to you in the BIOS under the overclocking section.

 

The professional reviews I linked to indicates the Phenom II X4 940 is a BE chip.

Additionally, when you purchase the boxed retail version of the Processor, it indicates this.

Basically, a "Black Edition" CPU will have a black-coloured retail box, with "Black Edition" and "overclocking" or "unlocked" written all over it.

The non "Black Editoin" Processors had a much plainer packaging.

A majority of them could only reach 3.8 GHz ~ 4.0 GHz.

 

For an example, my Phenom II X4 955 was only able to reach 3.9 GHz under sustainable temperatures and voltages...while my Phenom II X6 1090T (that I still dearly have) only reached 4.1 GHz with 1.47V with the Core Voltage.

i saw some videos on yt, gameplays actually, with this cpu running some pretty demanding games easily

just with better ram and gpu then me ofc

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is a very good cooling system for the price. In several cases, it outperforms even some of the ~$40 (or more) CPU coolers.

 

The Phenom II X4's are "true" Quad-cores, opposed to the socket AM3+ FX line of Processors.

Believe it or not, the per-cycle (IPC) performance on the older Phenom II "Deneb" and "Thubans" were actually better than the first little bit of Am3+ FX chips.

 

Basically if you compare the Quad-core Phenom II X4  to a Quad-Core FX Processor, given they have the same amount of cache, and frequency (i.e. both 3.2 GHz), the Phenom II actually performed better.

 

If the CPU or the motherboard is thermal throttling, then you still notice a hit in performance, but if that is not the situation, then it may be due to slow CPU / GPU / HDD / internet, etc.

 

The Phenon II CPU's are still pretty good performers, but of course, they won't be able to compete with something like the much newer Intel Core i5 or i7's (i.e. i5-4690K or i7-5960X). Plus, the chips are already nearly 8 years old, so they do show their age a bit.
