I've recently installed PlanetSide 2 and found that it's completely unplayable. I can play nearly any game on ultra 50/60 FPS, yet I get 20 FPS on very low settings? Does anyone know why this is happening to me? The specifications of my rig are in my signature.

I didn't know whether to put this in troubleshooting or PC gaming, I just took a shot in the dark and put it here.

Thanks for reading.

Yes, its to be expected, you would have to go crossfire to get more FPS.

Planetside 2 is un-optimized and it needs a crap load of power compared to other games to get acceptable frame rates.

Also run it in windowed fullscreen mode, helps with performance.

My bad. Figured the H100 cooler meant it was overclocked.

When I last played PS2 on my laptop I got 30-40fps on low at 1600x900, I have yet to play it on my desktop though.

The stock cooler was slowly dying, and I'm going to get an 8350 soon and OC it. So I thought, might as well get it now.

This game has always been under-optimised all the way from alpha up until the full release. I was getting about 10fps more about 2 months ago than I was 6 months ago, so I thought that it had been optimised well, but clearly not if this is happening to you!

Try locating the useroptions.ini file, it is in your Planetside 2 folder and you can open it with notepad.
Try changing the stuff in there to look something like this, and tweak it a little bit if it is not working (or if it worked you can work up through the graphics settings to find a happy medium)

[Rendering]
GraphicsQuality=4
TextureQuality=0
ShadowQuality=0
RenderDistance=1005.000000
Gamma=0.490000
MaximumFPS=250
UseLod0a=0
OverallQuality=-1
LightingQuality=4
EffectsQuality=4
TerrainQuality=4
FloraQuality=4
ModelQuality=4
VerticalFOV=74
ParticleLOD=4
ParticleDistanceScale=0.650000
FogShadowsEnable=0
MotionBlur=0
VSync=0
GpuPhysics=1

I would just have to say that it is some sort of incompatibility issue, but I'm not sure how you would find the culprit. Try updating the drivers for your Graphics Card (you probably already have), and also try updating your BIOS (believe it or not I was getting <10fps in Borderlands 2 before a BIOS update sorted it!).

Other than that I can only suggest uninstalling the game, removing all trace and doing a clean install of it, try running in admin mode, compatibility mode etc!

When you play The Game of Thrones, you win or you die...

Good news for everyone though, they are now looking to start to fix all of the performance issues with PS2. Even the devs say its horrible as it is.

Your Intel CPU will have the advantage of higher single threaded performance over the AMD CPU that the OP has, and the game isn't coded to fully utilise more cores yet. That's what the devs are now doing to make it run on the PS4.

They better do well, if that was a standard gaming pc it wouldnt come close to maxing ps2. I hope it isnt locked to 30fps. If it was locked to 40fps that wouldnt be too bad.

it will be locked to 40 no doubt, and pared down to 720p, it will have to be pared down to 720 otherwise game wouldnt be able to run in large fights.

It hates amd processors and its cpu bound so yeah.... only hope is we get PS4 code but we probably won't.

Also lowering your settings makes your FPS even worse because everything is almost switching to the already weak CPU, you have a 7970 and make use of it, copy paste this into first graphics part of useroptions.ini that is located in your Planetside 2 directory.
