The Final Check Before I Purcahse! X Mas/Grad Present to Myself! Items In Cart Ready to GO! Happy Holidays!

CeremonialSnips

Hey all,

So I've been annoying people on forums for around 5 months about builds/opinions on parts etc.   However I felt as though I needed to do this as this is my first time I've been looking into building a PC.  I have researched each component of the build and have determined that the parts you will see are the best bang for buck, particularly given the holiday/boxing day sales that are going on currently.

All components will be purchased using CAD, in Canada.  I am opting to hold off on the graphics card for the time being until a good deal comes on or I decide to wait for Pascal/ Artic Islands.  That being said I've assumed that I would spend  around $500 on a GPU.    So please ignore that omission from the build.  I would like the following; 1. Sanity Check for part compatability. 2. Comments on major componentry (CPU and MOBO/PSU).  3.  Any general issues with other parts etc.....

So here it is, my proposed build... everything is in the shopping cart and ready to go..... so for one last time... your opinions please:

I'd get 16gb of ram instead of 8gb for almost the same price. Albeit, a bit slower of course.

A better PSU would come in handy but yours that you selected isn't horrible

Yea... I was looking into that.... but hey for 80 bucks..... in Canada for a modular 750 w power supply... hard to resist.

There are $30 Aftermarket heatsinks with similar or the same performance.

Tone down on the mobo price.

Get a 240GB SP900 Adata SSD instead

Only spend up to $350 on the GPU, otherwise there may-possibly-but-kind-of-not-but-yes be a CPU bottleneck.

(Based off USD prices so I basically probably have no idea what I'm talking about)

There wouldnt be a CPU bottleneck, the i5 6600K is the best CPU for gaming.

PC is Intel Core i5 6400, GIgabyte H170 Gaming 3, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB 2400Mhz ,Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB, WD Blue 1TB, NZXT S340, ASUS Geforce GTX 960. Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/793XNG. Graphics card choices don't always have to be dictated on performance. If you want the game stream and power consumption of the GTX 970 get that. If you want raw performance of the R9 390 get that. In the end we are all gamers, so what if your buddy gets an extra 5 fps?

What purpose will this build serve? I'll assume gaming for now. Aside from the other concerns that were already mentioned (PSU, RAM), it looks fine to me!

I'd personally consider a different aftermarket cooler, maybe a Noctua D14 or D15, but that's only if you're planning on fairly heavy overclocking. If you're not overclocking, definitely go with a different cooling setup (and I'd personally go for another setup altogether).

Yes it will be a gaming rig.... what is wrong with ram... it's cheapest 3000 available.  Also as for the cooler I plan to OC... the dark rock I thought waspretty well on par with noctua's from what I have seen, seems to be beefy enough for a decent OC, and it's around 40 dollars cheaper... + free shipping which is pricey in Canada

Oh nothing wrong with the RAM, just that you might want to consider 16GB, especially if you heavily multitask like me. I guess it depends on your specific usage.

I'm not very familiar with this Dark Rock cooler in particular, but the Noctua D14 and D15 have a lot of value for heavy overclocking. It's a relatively quiet cooler that still performs fairly well, short of some AIO liquid coolers (which are more noisy). I wouldn't have the knowledge to be able to directly compare them with this Dark Rock one, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if it's worth the extra $40.

My best advice would be to choose components with the mindset of: "Is this x percent more expensive part worth a y percent performance increase to me?" Linus also mentioned in one of his videos that comparing the part's added expense to the entire rig may be a more effective way of visualizing this.

With a $500 USD budget that would get you a GTX 980ti: which is a prosumer graphics card. i7's are prosumer CPU's.

Still, if he isnt doing anything beyond gaming the i5 6600k makes more sense as he an get an even better GPU with the cash he saved

True, but if I were him I'd just get a $350 GPU and save the rest.
