Is this OK?

Go to solution Solved by soup,

The 600w was based on the 1000VA suggested for a UPS.

So it can draw 480 watts and yet deliver more than that, namely 600 watts.  I could see it being the other way around but not that way .  You have it supplying more than it takes.

So, my new PC. (Will be built on Christmas.)Will use roughly 575w of power on 100% utilization, being on 24/7. My PSU is an EVGA Supernova GS 650w.Is this OK? Btw i got these readings from here:http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

Edit: It says recommended amperage: 1000 VA. What does this mean?

The 1000VA is for a UPS, if you need one.

What's UPS?

Uninterrupted Power Supply. Essentially a rechargeable battery pack capable of keeping a PC on and running during power loss, but only for a very limited time if under 100%CPU/GPU load.

not true, 800VA UPS which i returned draw upto 480w. So according to calculations it would provide 600w to the PC (max).

Technically, va means volts*amps, which means watts.

Since Volts*amps = watts.

Eh?

I must be missing something here, it draws 480 yet delivers 600 thats above unity.  I hear Carnot, Kelvin and Clausius  turning in their graves.

For all who think they know how power works: http://www.power-solutions.com/watts-va

VA would mean Watts in a 1:1 draw/usage scenario. But just on the efficiency of PSUs alone we know that's not possible... yet. There's still this thing called resistance we need to circumvent.

Re-read the above. The OP is posting the calculator is suggesting a 1000VA UPS while asking what a UPS is. Another poster is saying their former 800VA UPS drew (or rather "provided" as it was poorly worded but not indecipherable) 480w, and then based on that calculation that the suggested 1000VA would provide 600w to the PC (or rather everything connected to it combined). Does this clarify your dilemma?

I wasn't experiencing a dillema, it was someone else who said there stuff worked at over unity (ok it was just bad words rather than bad physics).  But beyond saying it couldn't possibly be as described I never gave this a second thought .

The only reason I knew this was here is all posts of mine quoted appear as a number on my little envelope icon and I am sitting about waiting on people arriving for Hogmonay so I have replied

You were reading it wrong though, and still are. OP said the calculator suggested a 1000VA UPS. Wikiforce said the 800VA UPS they returned provided 480w of power, and added that based on that ratio that the 1000VA UPS suggested to the OP would provide up to 600w of power. It's two seperate UPSes here. Not one drawing 480w and providing 600w.
