Posted December 21, 2015 I am planning on adding some type of expansion to my server and I want to make the most of the full PCI-E X16 lane which can either run at 2.0 or 3.0 depending on the processor I use in it. I have seen some cards which offer a couple of usb 3.1 ports (20 gigabits) and some which offer four USB 3 ports (20 gigabits) but this is a bit of a waste compared to the total amount of capacity available on the lane which is something like 128Gbps. I know it'll never get the full bandwidth but surely there's a PCIe card out somewhere which will make better use of all of available bandwidth and I'm hoping that someone knows about some sort of card like this? There isn't much space left in the server so I can't split or go full size (I can go full length) but there is plenty of space outside for an external solution providing that it isn't one of them stupidly priced £1000+ external bays.
