Blackmagic Smartview Duo - Camera monitors for YouTube

Dredgy

Hi

This week I'm looking at my camera monitors, since I figure a few people on here will be interested in filming their own YouTube channel and will need a monitoring solution when filming themselves.

Blackmagic's SmartView Duo is a rackmountable solution with two independent 8" monitors.

Pros

  • Good size and brightness, easy to determine framing, focus and exposure
  • Reasonably colour accurate
  • SDI support, including passthrough
  • Can be controlled via ethernet
  • Cost effective in the right use case scenario
  • Multiple monitors are great for different frame guides or multiple cameras.
  • Portable
  • Excellent industrial design and construction
  • Great implementation of Tally

Cons

  • Poor viewing angles outside of the rack. Screens can be inverted to help with this, but is less than ideal.
  • Expensive if you only need a single, non-portable monitor
  • Software offers only basic controls
  • No HDMI support
  • Not properly colour accurate

Best to watch the video for the full details.

Dont get it new. They usually sell pretty cheap on ebay. Besides. All they really are inside are two monitors in a rackmount panel with some extra gizmos.

1. Good to know. There is no used market here for them at all.

2. You reached the same conclusion as me.

Get to know your local community center or church. They usually have some laying around if you are willing to donate some helping time.
