Just out of interest, why were they moving your OS to a "new SSD"?

 

Was it previously on a HDD or an SSD? Did they give you back the old drive? If not do they still have it?

yeah, all good questions, this seems odd ...

 

If OP paid for "moving" his stuff to a new SSD he may have paid for it and then have some sort of bill, if so, what is the description on the bill?

 

And why did they keep the old drive? (When I do moves like this I usually don't move a person's personal file and tell them they can retreive it themselves through a USB case/adapter or I connect it as a second driver if the desktop has the space).

 

This whole thing seems shaddy from both parties (OP has no backup ... really??? and shop doesn't do the job as asked and keeps the old drive???)

No no no, your hard drive, your data, your responsibility. Also the car dealership analogy is terrible.

Well people who are not tech savvy like us. May not understand how easy it is to lose data. Saying to a person hey your fault you didn't back up your OS is not right. Someone has to be responsible and educate them on outcomes/problems and like above sign a waiver showing who's responsible if something happened.

If you pay for a specific service and they screw you over. Even erase your shit without your consent or a waiver claiming no responsibility. Then they are at fault for damages.

Sorry I'll think of a new analogy for you.

Totally disagree, if someone pays for a backup service then yeah OK, in this specific case we only have the version of somebody that looks to be completely tech illiterate, and no offence to OP but tech illiterate people often, if not always, use wrong terminology in those situations and then blame the tech/IT guy when something goes wrong because of something they explained completely wrong ... Believe me, I've been there.

The very first thing I do with every device that comes in is get a copy of the user data, usually a image. This way, if the drive fails, I can still tell people their data isn't lost. Most people don't have ANY backup. It helps them and us. I'd never hand a device back, without a user's data on it, unless they explicitly asked me to.

Every single support page ever tolds you to backup data before sending device in. Thats their way of saying that they might or might not delete everything. I've got my devices back both way. Phone with complete reset, laptop with just refreshed OS. Both times did complete backup just in case.

 

More so that would been a good advice since you are playing around with HDDs to begin with. Even when it sounds like you were asking just to migrate OS to SSD and leave HDD as is.

Personally if I ran a pc shop. I would get people to sign a waiver saying that (yourself) or the company will backup your hard rive For a minimum couple days. If you lose people's stuff they should be liable. For example, If I send my car to the dealer and It comes back with stock rims and no stereo. Then the dealer would be in trouble. This is 2015 not 2000. If someone wipes your data they should be responsible for it.

Also alot of people have laptops and travel alot. They don't backup their data everyday. Maybe they done have time either.

Most people don't have ANY backup. It helps them and us. I'd never hand a device back, without a user's data on it, unless they explicitly asked me to.

 

for those who are now paranoid about doing their backups, i use imagex to make a 1-for-1 image of the important partition to a wim file. install 7zip, then tell the user to pick up their stuff there.

you know what sucks too? going to someone who (1) was doing what was requested on his job chit, (2) who did advise on possible data loss, (3) who would have advised you to do your own data backup before sending it in, (4) who asked you to sign the said job chit describing (1-3), failure of which (5) he would not proceed? and suddenly, despite (1-5) being performed, suddenly its his fault that indeed data was lost?

 

its cold, yes, but like every other person with some semblance of computer knowledge knows, it is always up to the end user to take care of his own data. going to court over this is stupid. there are services out there that can attempt data recovery so long as the information on the platters are not overwritten. its not cheap, but affected persons will need to take it as an expensive lesson in taking care of their own shit, man. its part of adulthood, ffs. only children have their parents held responsible for their piss poor upbringing. once you enter the work force, you make a mistake, you are held responsible for it. likewise for the it support personel, he gets the job chit, he does whats listed on the job chit, any other tasks he does as goodwill must be stated as such. done as goodwill, on a best effort basis.

 

we are not cold people, but lord knows how many times we get burnt and screwed over doing a favor to users who dont understand what risks are involved when it comes to data. it has come to a point for me at least, if you are not comfortable with the possibility of data loss, dont ask me for help.

 

your operating system failed? that sucks. what i can do is to attempt to rip the data into a wim file that you can extract on your own, but (1) what you do with the wim file is your own business, and (2) if your hard drive is failing, im not doing data recovery. there are data recovery specialists not affiliated with me that you can reference. i will NOT be your damned intermediary. So the data recovery quotation is SGD$1500, you pay this on your own. (3) an extension of 1, no, i will not transfer the data for you once the PC is reimaged/hdd replaced. I can teach you how, but no way in hell am i going to do it for you.
