Asus GTX 970 strix strange temp issue.

fresilo

Hi my problem is weird and only started today. I have an oveclock on this card that go like this :

Clk : 1460mhz but in gpu tweak it monitors 1523mhz and in valley benchmark it tells 1662mhz

Memory at 8010 mhz in valley it shows 4005 mhz

Voltage : 1.213 but in gpu tweak it tops at 1.2 in monitoring

Power target : 120%

Temperature target : 79°c

I run this oveclock for at least 3 months and no matter what I tried at it it is stable and never gone above 68°c at 40% fan. But today the temps are going to 80°c really rapidly and even when I put in silent mode at 1233 mhz (-20 stock) it goes straight to 78°c at nearly full fan speed !!? Can someone help me. The only thing I did is support the card this morning from the top of the case because I saw that I was sagging to much for my taste. The problem appears first game session after that.

****update**** I undone my retention setup and the temps dropped back to normal... But I made some testing and whenever I apply pressure to the card I sent the temp go up about 15°c instantly and come back as soon as I release. That make me wonder what are the real temps, the higher ones or the lower ones ??? I'll post a link for a video showing you what happens so maybe someone can come with an idea.

it sounds like your support is pushing your heatsink in a way that makes it not contact the GPU die correctly

not sure if this is a common issue or a defective card, but just dont touch the heatsink so you get the lower temp, and that should be correct

Don't believe Valley whatsoever.

Use GPU-Z and click on the sensors tab, then click where it says the speed, and it will say "max" if you click 2 times.

Valley's memory clock just needs to be multiplied by 2 to display the correct speed.

IE: 8000 mhz actual = 4000 in valley.

looks like your cooler came loose a bit. what i think is happening in the video is the moment you push the card up, the die doesnt properly contact the cooler anymore.

i'd suggest contacting asus or your retailer with your problem, and either RMA, or fasten the screws again.
