Bluray & Media Players

XeroDarkness7

Hello, I'm building a computer with a Bluray disc drive in it and I really don't have much luck with Media Player and the like for playing DVDs and Blurays and such, so I am wondering if any of you have better suggestions?

IIRC you need special SW to play blurays.  I dunno if any do it for free, but I couldn't get GOM or VLC to do it.  So, I had to get WinDVD PRO 11 though I heard PowerDVD is better.

What's the difference?

Guess that would depend on your definition of "hassle". It plays rips/files/ISOs with no issue, if you are playing direct from a retail disc you would need to follow this tutorial.

That would be hassle in my opinion. lol.

Sucks that Blu-Ray software has to cost so much. When I can get a Blu-Ray player for my TV for cheaper than the PC software, I am not willing to buy the software.

The little bit of tinkering with that tutorial would negate the need for paid software, which is why the "hassle" factor is worth to me  B)

Bluray support on PC is pretty abysmal and the best solution if you just want to pop in a disc and enjoy it as intended is PowerDVD.  I still prefer MakeMKV just so I can rip everything and put it on my media server so I don't have to mess around with loading discs and being forced to watch unskippable trailers and DMCA anti-piracy warnings.

you can play blurays with VLC you just have to download the keys. There is a tutorial here.

VLC doesn't support menus in Blu-Rays, I personally use PowerDVD Live subscription, it's affordable and provides the best version with free upgrades so long as on an active subscription.

Since I have not used PowerDVD before, if you actually purchase it, does that version you purchased not get updated at all or something? Reason being is for an Annual Subscription it would be almost the cost of purchasing it once per year (unless it's special of $59.99 for multiple pieces of their software is VERY special). I kind of would rather pay for one suite of software once every 2-4 years and just be done with it than subscribing for a service every year unless there's some major benefits to the free upgrades. Can you elaborate why you think Live is better than just a purchased version please?
