So i know that you cant use more that 4GB of RAM on a 32 bit computer, but does this mean if the CPU is 64 bit and my OS is 32 bit i can use 6GB of RAM, or is the OS limiting it to 4GB. Thanks

The OS limits it.

Hmm. I have a Athlon x2 64 (in a 'server') running Ubuntu with a 32 bit OS and i got 6GB of RAM to run (it at least goes on the desktop)

With Ubuntu(and non Windows OS's in general) its different since they use PAE, which allows them to use more than 4GB despite being 32 bit. You can use up to 64GB of RAM with PAE if I remember correctly.

Basically a 32bit OS can only "see" up to 4GB of RAM. It will not recognize any more. At this point in time, there isn't a reason to run a 32-bit (commonly labelled now as x86) OS unless you are running really old hardware.

Are you POSITIVE it is Ubuntu 32 bit? By definition, 32 bit software can only acknowledge 32 bits (2^(32)=4GB)

Whatever .

If any component is 32 bit (cpu/OS ) , you will be limited to 3.5GB

FFS 32 bit Ubuntu can address more than 4GB of RAM, it uses PAE....

Windows is just stuck in the past.

no need to swear......

4 gb? my grandad was only seeing 3 out of his 8 gb usable on windows 10 32 bit

Vram also counts in the 4GB so if you have a 1GB vram card you'll only get 3GB. ( at least that's what I read online )

Imagine running a GPU with 4GB of vram what would happen then?

Its just using on board graphics so i don't think its VRAM, plus i know how many sticks of RAM are in there and how many GB each they are

so if you have a 64bit CPU but a 32bit OS..... WHY DONT YOU JUST INSTALL THE 64bit OS!?!?!?!?!?!

Leverage ALL THE PERFORMANCE

The thing was being a butt so i just went with the 32 but. Im redownloading the 64 currently for round 2 though
