I only had one drive that actually died. It said caution...for three years, then the drive finally died (The corrupt sectors took over). It still spools up and you can put data on it, but you wouldn't want to. That being said, if you drop a drive, obviously a previously fine drive will be dead now.

File system errors are a different story. Just because you have them, doesn't mean you have a bad drive (Though it might be a cause). It's usually software related. When my PC was running with no SMART issues, I still received disk errors every now and then (I could tell because my PC would lock up on some tasks, like shutting down). I usually run a disk check manually every few months.

I see. The laptop is 1 month old. Not sure if I need to run a check but I might.

I also noted a defrag was being done on Las session before it occurred and there were 1-2 errors listed in event viewer under defrag

So my System File Error was likely OS spazzing out?

@Captain_WD what do you think? Should I run WD Lifeguard's lengthy diagnostics or is this enough for me to be calm that I won't lose any data due to drive failure?

Not sure. On that screenshot it says all are okay.

 

But run the WD Lifeguard diagnostics just to be safe. If it tells anything bad, RMA the laptop.

Actually the S.M.A.R.T. status shows you the current condition of the drive. Each entry measures a different thing. I find this particular article very useful for understanding what each value is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

 

The S.M.A.R.T. status can't really predict when your drive will fail but rather give you some info on its current state so you can have in mind if it's in danger or not. There are cases, as @kameshss showed you, where a drive can continue functioning with bad or unreadable sectors. There are other cases where a drive can have a perfect S.M.A.R.T. status one day and fail the next due to some reason. This is why it is important to always have backups of your most valuable data.

 

It's always a good idea to run WD DLG as it can show you if the drive is currently safe to operate with or not. If the drive happens to fail the test - simply contact our support and apply for the RMA procedure.

 

Your current S.M.A.R.T. status seems OK to me so I'd say it is in good condition

Yeah, run the extended test and see what you come up with. Your drive looks to be good though.

 

Check for the latest drivers for your laptop as well. Otherwise you might clean install the OS (You shouldn't need to though...). I hope it's just a one time system error and not a recurring thing.

Currently running extended test. It's about 40% done. Will report back with results when over.

Might be worth mentioning. I have only Intel rapid storage and no wd driver. Power savings are also off for the drive since I followed advice from the Lenovo forums. Hope that isn't an issue.

I ran the 3 and a half hour test that is included in WD Lifeguard - it passed successfully. Does that mean the driver is in immaculate condition?
