[Help!] Mixed Ram on a Z97 Mobo

Hey guys, I currenty have a Gigabyte Z97-UD3H v1.0 motherboard with 2x4Gb Patriot 1600 MHz ram in it. I also have 4x2Gb sticks of Corsair 1333 MHz. My motherboard has 2 black slots and 2 grey slots. I have the 2 4Gb sticks of Patriot 1600Mhz in the grey slots. I tried putting 2 of the corsair sticks in the black slots  but it wouldn't post. Is there any way of making the memory work together?

Get memory with the same speeds and timings

Pro Tip: don't use flash when taking pictures of your build; use a longer exposure instead. Prop up your camera with something (preferably a tripod) if necessary.

Get memory with the same speeds and timings

The motherboard should automatically set the faster ram to the slower rams speed and timings.

Look at the rated timings and frequencies for the different memory sets. Use the "lowest common multiple" of the two set

 

For an example:

Your Patriot 2 X 4GB kit runs at

  • DDR3 1600 MHz
  • 9-9-9-24 timings
  • 1.5V

Your Corsair 4 X 2GB kit operates at

  • DDR3 1333 MHz
  • 8-8-8-24 timings
  • 1.6V

Then you set your memory settings to

  • DDR3 1333 MHz
  • 9-9-9-24 timings
  • 1.6V

You will have to put in the memory that WORKS, change the timings, THEN put the other set in.

The DRAM settings aren't compatible with the second set until AFTER you make AND save the settings to the BIOS.

You wont be able to get into the BIOS if it runs into an error during P.O.S.T....(I.e. incompatible memory)

Well if your Patriot kit is 9-9-9-24 1.6V, and your other kit is 8-8-8-24 1.65V, then for the sake of it ensuring they will work, set the memory settings to

  • 9-9-9-24
  • 1.65V

The Kingston HyperX kit might not work with 1.6V since they are rated for 1.65V at 1600MHz with those timings.

 

 

Instead of all this guess work, WHICH Patriot and Kingston memory kits do you have?

Are you able to get the two sets of memory working together?

DDR3-1600 MHz RAM with Cas 11 timings is quite rare. You usually don't see that amount of a latency for 4GB density sticks...

No success. At 11-11-11-28 and v1.66 for both channels, the patriot memory will boot. Throw in the Kingston with it and it won't post. oh well :P

Mixed RAM is fine-my Z97 Sabertooth MKII has no issues with this configuration:

Perhaps the mixed capacities is the problem?

Mixed RAM is fine-my Z97 Sabertooth MKII has no issues with this configuration:

I can't confirm it myself as I've only got 4GB sticks of DDR3-with DDR2 I have no problems mixing 1GB and 2GB sticks, but those motherboards use an older chipset that isn't part of the CPU.

No success. At 11-11-11-28 and v1.66 for both channels, the patriot memory will boot. Throw in the Kingston with it and it won't post. oh well :P

What frequency?

The Kingston memory is only rated for DDR3 1333 MHz, so 1600 MHz might not work. You need to use the slower of the two...1333 being the slower between 1600 and 1333.

Use these settings for ALL channels:

- DDR3 1333 MHz

- 11-11-11-28 timings

- 1.65V

In my own systems (two systems)...

- mixing DDR3-1866 with DDR3-2133 with VERY much different timings + voltage.

- Mixing a 16GB (8GB X 2) with a 8GB (4GB X 2) with same frequency + voltage, but different timings.

The earlier (adopter) DDR3 memory kits ran at 1.65V -- it was later on when teh voltage was later reduced to 1.6V, 1.5V, and even 1.35V.

The OP's Kingston 2GB sticks are rated at 1.65V

Oh you're right, I got confused with another memory kit.

You should install the memory in the same-coloured slots...for an example, Patriot sticks in the black slots, and Kingston in the gray slots.
