"Tokyo police are taking preventative steps to battle illegal and potentially hostile drones in their city airspace. Authorities have introduced a massive net-wielding interceptor drone as part of their new security task force."

 

"Starting later this month, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will deploy a single interceptor drone attached to a specially-trained riot police unit. More such drones are to join the force in February of next year."

 this thing has a lot of power compared to a drone most recreational users would have. I can see the 21st century headline now.... Drones stolen by bigger drone. news at 11..........LOL........... I wonder how much a stolen drone is worth? maybe those mandatory drone registrations aren't such a bad idea.

Why are drones such a big deal? We have had RC aircraft and helicopters since the 80s and 90s. Even RC cars since the 70s.

Why are drones such a big deal? We have had RC aircraft and helicopters since the 80s and 90s. Even RC cars since the 70s.

 

Because back then RC planes and helicopters required a lot of money, knowledge and skill. Nowadays every dumbass can buy a drone and fly around, without any regard for safety or without thinking about consequences. When a plane prop broke your finger (not me!) or slashed your wrist (me!) you knew that your toy can be deadly, and you took care of stuff like max range and so on. Also, you didn't fly over a city. 

 

I saw people get hit by drones, thankfully those small, shitty ones. I also saw a drone - a bigger one, with camera - crash into a car. Well, the damage was clearly visible. There was news lately that some kid got hit by a rogue drone and it slashed his eyeballs, and now he's gonna be blind for life. 

 

That's because - as I said - every dumbass can buy a ready-made drone and fly around. And while toys are pretty safe, some idiots will buy heavy-duty drones, and won't even think for a second "what will happen if I lose control?" "What will happen if my transmitter goes off?" etc. They don't care.

I see now. I am into more of land vehicles and I hitting myself going full speed leaves a mighty fine bruise even with a tiny 1/10th scale 

 

And now imagine a nice camera drone, such as 3D Robotics Iris+ (~3 pounds) or Phantom 3 Standard (2.7 IIRC) going rogue and flying at its top speed (around 45 mph) into someone. Or something. Add a flurry of propellers moving at thousands revolutions per minute, which won't be stopped by stuff like your finger or skin...

 

Now imagine that very same drone over a closed airspace near an airport. Or the same drone going rogue because of all the interference in the city.
