Is this safe for the CPU?

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

No. You must have a cooler attached to the CPU.

Ok, so I totally forgot to buy the cooler for the CPU, it will take another 5-7 days for it to get here, and the rest of the parts for the build are coming tomorrow. Will it be safe to run basic things like installing the OS and system/driver updates just relying on the case fans? (Thermaltake Core V71 stock fans) The room I'm going to keep the computer is already cool with ambient temperature (like 60-65 F).

So would doing basic updates and installations be ok or should I just wait till the cooler comes in?

most CPUs come with a stock cooler you can use

DO NOT run the PC without a CPU cooler

NO. DO NOT RUN IT. The thing will hit around 200 deg C if left running without a cooler for an extended (15 min) period of time.

Fahrenheit. The maximum temperature for the CPU is something like 100C for Intel CPUs. Without anything cooling it, it'll overheat much sooner than 15 minutes.

It's an i7-5960x, so unless I missed something, it didn't come with a stock cooler

Then you will need to wait.

NO, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU EVEN BOOT UP THE PC WITHOUT A COOLER.

IF THE CPU DOESNT DIE, PERMANENT DEGRADATION WILL CERTAINLY OCCUR!!!

I'm not sure if the thermal protection systems will kick in fast enough to save it if you run it without a cooler. It probably will but I wouldn't try it. It won't be able to run for more than a few seconds at a time anyway.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

They will most likely. I forgot to plug in my pump on my Kraken x60 with my 3570K. It blue screened in the middle of booting. CPU works fine.

There you had the advantage of the thermal mass of the block plus the water in it. This slows the temperature rise and makes sure its spread out evenly. Without anything on the CPU it seems possible to have an area of the chip reach a critical temperature before the heat transfers enough across the spreader to trigger a thermal shutdown since the sensor isn't in the die itself I don't think.

I'm not willing to test it without a cooler so, that's out of the question. If I remember correctly, Intel puts sensors in each individual core.

Lmfao, sure, fire it up kid... make sure you're pumping 1.3v into it also and the ambient temp of your room is around 25c.

No I agree, definitely wouldn't suggest that!

You're correct on the sensors. I was curious so I looked it up, this document ( http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/white-papers/cpu-monitoring-dts-peci-paper.pdf ) says they actually put multiple sensors per die.

It makes me curious to try at some point with a worthless processor. See if the shutdown occurs fast enough to save it with no added thermal mass. I'll attach a couple thermocouples to watch it.

xD I had a feeling it would be a bad idea, but I've never tried doing it without a cooler nor have I heard of anyone trying it, so I wanted to know exactly what would happen and if it would be a bad idea.
