How can that happen ? How could malware still stick to your computer even after you completely formated the HDD ?

Some extremely malicious ones can rewrite your HDD boot sector and implant it so that every boot it infects itself again.

thats not even the nasty stuff these days. you can clean the boot sector.

 

theres been experiments on malware in HDD firmware.

well... technically, the moment your OS can update firmware on any hardware on the system, malware has a chance at that too.

 

thats a VERY narrow scope piece of malware tho... you'd most likely have to write a specific piece of malware for every specific model number of hardware you want to "support" (attack)

that could be achievable since malware could download the specific bios/hdd firmware hack once it detects what your pc is made of...

well, you'll still have to code the specific pieces.

the reason theres barely any mac/linux virusses out there is because hackers just dont bother.

 

im pretty convinced hackers arent gonna bother writing malware for specific hard drives, when theres literally thousands of different hard drives out there, when they dont bother with the gaping security hole most macbooks in circulation are.

Why haven't we brought up the malware that can transfer from your speakers to another PC and OC all the hardware and kill it or the really scary stuff is it used the radio waves (or some kind of wave) emited from the CPU and they can use that to bypass literally every password. Don't ask me how it works I read it on if you have a bitcoin wallet and you go to a coffee shop it can be stolen.

How can that happen ? How could malware still stick to your computer even after you completely formated the HDD ?

It called Rootkit my friend which is one of devastating and sophisticated malware that cyber criminals develop to bypass antivirus vendors protection. The Rootkit has capabilities of rewrite HDD MBR(MasterBootRecord) in order to stay a live even a hard format and download more deadly malware which is Botnet. This malware is difficult to remove, and sometimes cause victim to throw away the HDD and buy new one, because it futile to reinstall Windows if the Rootkit still alive even a hard format. The reason that the Rootkit modify MBR is to able to resurrect from the dead and able to download more malware onto your machine.

the reason theres barely any mac/linux virusses out there is because hackers just dont bother.

 

im pretty convinced hackers arent gonna bother writing malware for specific hard drives, when theres literally thousands of different hard drives out there, when they dont bother with the gaping security hole most macbooks in circulation are.

Due to the complexities in developing firmware viruses, no one would design one unless it was for very specific applicatios.  The typical stuff that terrorizes the net, encrypts and ransoms your data, steals your credit card number, mines for bitcoins or becomes a Zombie for a DDOS is cheap in comparison to something that'd get into firmware.  You'd need either firmware source code for each device, which is very hard to get, or backward engineer every piece of firmware.  This is stuff that needs a LOT of resources and R&D manhours, this is something that state sponsored espionage would get into and it'd be aimed at specific targets or risk detection and countermeasure development.

well, you'd have to code a virus for OSX and attack 5% of the market

or you code a virus for windows and attack the 50% of the market that runs windows without an antivirus.

well... technically, the moment your OS can update firmware on any hardware on the system, malware has a chance at that too.

 

thats a VERY narrow scope piece of malware tho... you'd most likely have to write a specific piece of malware for every specific model number of hardware you want to "support" (attack)
