FX6300 @1.5V

Go to solution Solved by Gofspar,

1.5v is fine

you're not going to see much improvement in performance with FX above 4.5GHz.

infact, the higher you OC FX, the worse your minimums get (based on my own experience and some observations made in benchmarks)

It depends on its lithography. With the old 65nm Conroe the limit was 1.5V.

is it the higher lithography can handle more voltage?

So haswell can handle more voltage then skylake?

Not sure, never dealt with Skylake.

And yet you still reccomend it.

it outperforms I3s, in newer games it gets close to a i5 4430, costs less.

cheaper setup, equal or better performance. what is there not to like?

if you fail to realize this argument. you also fail to understand the principle of "price to performance"

Only Haswell i3, not the i3 6100.

it depends.

we never saw how the FX 6300 performs with 2133MHz RAM, how much of a boost does it get?

we know that the Haswell i3 got upwards of 10-60% boost depending on the games. the FX suffers from much lower IPC, so faster memory should help it A LOT getting much needed data in and out of the CPU.

Sadly, Digital Foundry didnt have a mobo that supported 2133MHz RAM... nor do i....

BUT, i got a set of 2x4GB Kingston Savage 2400MHz RAM recently.. i gonna pair this with my 7870k + 7950 Boost then run games and see how big a difference it makes with a Athlon 860k.

sine the IMC of Piledriver is unchanged in Steamroller, we can assume that the scaling should be very close.

The problem will be however in actually getting high speed RAM actually working properly with an FX 6300, and remember that Skylake sees noticeable performance improvements with high speed RAM as well.

The problem will be however in actually getting high speed RAM actually working properly with an FX 6300, and remember that Skylake sees noticeable performance improvements with high speed RAM as well.

high speed RAM with FX is fine if you only use 2 DIMMS rather then 4 DIMMS.

the issue comes when you try to run 4 DIMMS above anything faster then 1600MHz.... as i myself struggled with my Sabertooth, trying to get 1866MHz 4x4GB kit. As soon as i took 2 DIMMS out, it would run 1866 without issues.

Skylake does benefit A LOT from faster RAM speeds. but on the contrary, the boards that supports it (only Z170 boards, for now) is VERY expensive.

we are talking 98 bucks for the cheapest one ATM...

on the contrary, the cheapest board on the AMD side capable of overclocking (mildly), capable of 2400MHz RAM -> is the ASRock 970m Pro3. Which costs about 50-67 bucks depending on the "daily price fluctuation"....

2400MHz DDR3 is also cheaper then 2666 or 3200MHz DDR4.... you need at least 2666 or 3200 to see any tangible benefit with Skylake (due to latencies vs clock speed in the lower end DDR4)

Skylake is a solid choice. and one i would reccomend if it was 20-30 bucks cheaper for the total package (RAM + CPU + mobo). However as it stands. you got 3 choices in the "lower" end..

FX 6300 -> Skylake i3 6100 -> Haswell i5 44XX

there is no if's or butt's.... Haswell i3 is "too expensive" for its performance, since the FX can beat it at an equal or cheaper price point. Skylake i3 is expensive but straight out better. i5 rules them all. but costs the most.

You do realise that that motherboard while being able to overclock the RAM can't really manage a decent overclock with the FX 6300?

it can. trust me, it can.

also, you do not need any real OC to the FX 6300. get it to 4.2GHz, then dump +0.050 to +0.075v into the SB to help the IMC and you should be golden
