My friend has the fx6300 cpu. I fitted it with a 212 evo instead of the tiny cooler the PC had originally. Is this chip overclockable? Can we squeeze any more performance out of it? Would the 212 evo handle a decent overclock? I have never worked with AMD processors before. Thanks!

all fx parts are overclockable, you need to make sure your power supply and the motherboard can handle it tho. some cheaper boards have very crappy power delivery, and may burn out when overclocking (thats especially the case for the 8 core parts, not sure about the 6 core parts)

PSU has the headroom, would need to investigate thermals on the motherboard. All I know is that its a gigabyte matx motherboard with grey heatsinks and the 8 pin cpu header is crammed in the corner.

If it's one of those cheap motherboards without the little heatsinks on the VRMs next to the CPU, then I wouldn't recommend overclocking. If it does have them, well, don't worry about it too much. If you are worried you can use one of those fancy infrared thermometers to see if everything is under control.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

its got a heatsink on the vrms, albeit a small one...

What motherboard does he have, I'm pretty sure you can OC on 970 chipset but it is recommended to have 990X or 990FX for heavy OCing.

Edit - With FX CPUs the motherboard is quite important, your OC potential can be limited depending on your mobo. With a decent mobo you should be able to get 4.5Ghz pretty easily with a 212.

I edited my previous post... Check the thermometer thing. Chances are it can get a bit toasty.

I'm pushing 4.5Ghz with my 8350 on a Hyper 212 EVO, that's with a Gigabyte 990FX mobo (INSAAANE POWER DELIVERY!! Really though, this thing could work with a 9590..) But generally you can OC on a 970 chipset. I wouldn't recommend OCing on a lesser chipset.
