Wondering if an internal hard drive is necessary for gaming?

Title basically explains it all, Im looking to build a new pc and want to know if i can get by without buying a hard drive and use that money to put towards a more expensive gpu or something else.

Well, you're going to need some form of storage....

So i take it i do need one. Could you recommend me a budget one?

You could run it off a USB or external HDD but man is that going to be slow compared to SATA

Yes, otherwise you're not going to be able to install or store anything. You'd be able to boot into the BIOS, but no OS without one. 

 

Seagate Barracuda drives are good value.

You do need storage space for the OS, drivers and other software including the game itself. Some games can be installed on external drives but others require to be installed in an internal one. You do need internal storage in order for the computer to function after all. :)

I've never seen one without that option, funnily enough. I mean, both external and internal drives are the same thing at the end of the day, the only difference really is the transfer speeds of SATA (or more extreme such as M.2 and PCI-E, but I doubt he'll go for that). Right?

I think he's referring to the drive letter, specifically. Some games will default to C:\ and won't give you an option to change where it's installed.

 

Not much of a problem these days though - even Origin and Steam allow you to specify the install location now

Seagate drives do have a higher failure rate. Personally I am willing to spend the extra $10 for the peace of mind that WD brings.

The difference in failure rates is tiny, if meaningful at all. Do you have a link to s test that shows the failure rates?

The only stat which shows a higher Seagate failure rate is the hilariously badly designed report from BlackBlaze that keeps getting circulated. That report has so much wrong with it that you should take the results with a grain of salt.

 

You have no idea what the age of each HDD is when it died, vs the average age of all HDD's. You don't know if different HDD's were used under different load conditions or environments. You basically don't know anything at all. Plus they were using consumer HDD's in Data Centre conditions, which is like using a stock Toyota Prius w/ all-season tires during the Baja Off-Road Desert Race.

 

From a practical standpoint, WD and Seagate HDD's - at the consumer level - are equally reliable. I happen to prefer WDC, but I will usually buy whatever is cheapest at my given capacity and drive type (eg: NAS drives).

 

I have a mix of both WDC and Seagate drives in my home server. None of either has died on me, and they are all consumer drives.

you can either get a seagate barracuda 1tb for 50$ or a small 120-240gb ssd and use an external drive for games.

i've had my seagate barracuda 3tb for some time now ( the 3tb is supposed to have the highest failure rate), and it hasn't disapointed me.

Not only is it still running strong and quietly , but i get high speeds of up to 210MBs
