Dropbox Shuts down Mailbox and Carousel

Dropbox is shutting down the popular Mailbox, email client and Carousel a less well known photo managing client.

 

 

 

Dropbox is doing away with Mailbox, the email app it acquired in March 2013, and Carousel, the company's attempt at a standalone photo management app. The company says that it's making this decision now to focus more directly on the primary Dropbox app and the collaborative features it's known for. "The Carousel and Mailbox teams have built products that are loved by many people and their work will continue to have an impact," wrote Dropbox's founder/CEO Drew Houston and CTO Arash Ferdowsi in a blog post. "We’ll be taking key features from Carousel back to the place where your photos live — in the Dropbox app. We’ll also be using what we’ve learned from Mailbox to build new ways to communicate and collaborate on Dropbox."

Mailbox will shut down on February 26th, with Carousel following the next month on March 31st. Dropbox says it's giving Carousel extra time so that users can download their photos and move them elsewhere if they so choose. "If you have conversations or shared albums you want to save from Carousel, we’ll provide a simple export tool early next year," the company notes.

IMHO - This is sad. I liked Mailbox :( Oh well.

Didn't even know dropbox had a mail client.. But carousel I never cared for.

NOOOOOO, it was a good client!

Seriously...used it soley for gmail push notifications on my iPhone

 

stock mail app doesn't support push notes for gmail :(

While I didn't use Mailbox, I've heard a lot of people like it.

I think it's sad how common it is for companies to acquire another company and/or technology/product and then basically either run it into the ground, shut it down or both.

It happens way too often.

don't know what's so good about mailbox. Tried it for 2 weeks, went back to the stock mail app without thinking twice about it

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 12 years later: It's finally coming!!! I don't care anymore

It's also not apples fault, Google did away with them when they launched their own gMail app in the App Store. I just hate that app, it's literally just web-gmail on my phone. I much prefer a full blown client

They didn't. They bought Mailbox in 2013.
