Beast $4500 build thoughts.

dark_xzyph3r
Go to solution Solved by brob,

Get rid of the four HDD the SSDs that you have is plenty and change the two Titan X's for two 980 TI's.  You shave off $2,265.99 and you can put it towards higher capacity SSDs and a custom water loop.

Exchanging the two Titan X for 980 Ti would save at most $300 total.

How do you know the storage needed by the OP? Even so, dropping the four hdd saves $240.

My arithmetic suggests a total savings of just $540, not over $2,000. Is there something else that is included in the "savings"?

Hey guys I have constructed a build that I feel is capable of pretty much anything and want thoughts.. Yes I know that I have titans on it but they are about $780 each from a friend. Also the ssd's.. Two of them are gonna be in raid 0 and the other two will be in another raid 0 since I am gonna be dual booting with it (some programs only work on windows 7 or 8.1) also the hdds will all be in raid 10 with nigtly backups via 10gb to another server that has 2tb drives in raid 1.

Triple 980ti's (Claasifieds or Lightnings) instead of Titans

No HDD's

Larger SSD's (4x 500GB = 2x Raid0 arrays for 1 TB of storage),and/or M.2 , and/or PCI-e

Custom water loop

Better RAM i.e 2x G.Skill Trident X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-2666

No Optical drive (no need just, use USB)

Larger SSD's, or M.2 , or PCI-e

Seasonic PSU

Ether custom water loop or EK AIO.

Water cooler is only temp I am going custom down the road. Ssd's are just not cheap enough for multiple tb of just solid state storage. Too much microstutter with 980 ti's. I really like this case. No need to swap out psu since I have never had problems with corsair and it is 80+ titanium :P

Instead of RAIDing the SSDs, just get a fast M.2 drive, an OCZ Revodrive or an Intel 750.

And like I said, you are going to be kicking yourself in the head for not having gone with 980Tis.

If this is gonna be a crazy-ass no-holds-barred build, minimize your spinning rust.

No raid 0 , get a larger intel pcie drive instead ( better performance and less chance of performance.

Also get haswell e or wait for broadwell e to come out soon  ( you will get an 8 core cpu for the same price)

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

I don't care about space since I have 14 TB of storage on my NAS I am only going with 4 1TB drives because I can put them in raid 10 for speed and for reliability with 2 of them being able to fail and I still have my storage.. They are only for my games so no reason for going with 3tb drives

raid 0 is not recommended with more than 2 drives , as it adds a higher chance of failure  and scaling is an issue.

You could buy a 1.2tb 750 ssd (on newegg for 600$ last time i checked) , but you can get a 950 pro for a better price.

Xeon or i7 , you should still wait for broadwell e , it's supposed to come out VERY soon ( Q4 2015 or Q1 2016) , you'll get better price/performance and more cores , unless you can find ivybridge e for cheaper .

CPU - If you could wait for Broadwell-E, you can get 10 cores for like $999.

GPU - Two 980tis

RAM - Get a faster 32gb RAM kit

HDD/SDD - Samsung 950 Pro (512GB) and just buy a cheap 1TB SSD

Mouse - G602 or MX Performance/Master

Yeah I am buying in may so things can still change :) there are gonna be 2 sets of raid 0 with 2 ssd's in each raid. (Ie: {Raid0 1 - 2 ssd's} {Raid0 2 - 2 ssd's} {Raid10 1 - 4 1TB drives}

For the mouse I am only going with eh razer mouse for the thumb and pinky rest. I was thinking of going with like 2 1tb ssd's in raid 1 or since I'm a speed freak then raid 0 then backup nightly to my NAS. Yeah I am looking at a 1600 kit I was on Mobile so that's why I went with 1333. I am not changing the gpu's since I am going for the bling factor and I am getting them for $750-$780 each. I can always switch the CPU since I am buying in may.

SSD behave differently than HDD. A single larger ssd will perform no worse than a raid 0 array except in larger serial i/o, in 4K read/write it will generally perform better. Since the bulk of Windows i/o is generally done in 4K blocks, that makes the single larger ssd a better choice in most systems. For slightly less than the price of the 4x250GB 850 EVO one can buy a 1TB 850 EVO.

I would suggest an 8x8GB memory kit. This would guaranty quad channel memory operation at advertised speed and timings. With two kits the modules can get mixed. Also, XM Profiles are based on kit density.

A 1200W psu would make much more sense.

So why not go with 2x2TB RAID 1 array. Much more reliable than anything that uses RAID 0.

The ssd's will be in 2 different raid 0's for 2 diff os's. Yeah I was looking at my ram choice and since I have no need for 64 GB I am prolly going with either 16 or 32 GB of RAM in quad channel.

The argument holds. If you insist on two separate drives go with two 512GB units. But there really is no need just put multiple volumes on the unit. Each o/s would be installed in its own volume. A single 1TB ssd should be more reliable than two 512GB units because writes will be spread more evenly. With smaller drives one will tend to have a higher concentration of writes.

So why not go with 2x2TB RAID 1 array. Much more reliable than anything that uses RAID 0.

Alright I will revise this build and edit the post :P your argument makes sense. I am also thinking of just using a pcie drive in place of the hdd's
