Z97 Processor Updgrade

HawkJ
Go to solution Solved by Fetzie,

I have Asus Z97 Deluxe motherboard and a i7 4770k processor installed in it. I would like to replace my 4770k with a better CPU with more cores. Is there any processor on Z97 that has more than 4 cores? Price doesn't matter. Need for cores for engineering application.

Nope, you're looking at X99 for more cores. The Broadwell-E chips are supposed to be coming Q1 2016, maybe you want to wait for those.

The only CPU better than the one you currently have is the i7 4790k which was just a refresh of the 4770k (and still 4 cores). Very small improvement if at all. Not worth it. As pointed out above, if you need more cores you have to go to X99

Yeah. Or according to what others are saying. Might need to update grade to the enthusiast platform.

Yeah. In that case I'll wait for the refresh and get an enthusiast grade motherboard.

No there are not, the best CPU on Z97 (that isn't a Xeon mind u) is the 4790k (right here ;) ) So you will need to go full X99 and something like a 5820k should be pretty good!!

Haha. Well. I don't mind going for The 8 core version as well on x99. But now I'll have to upgrade both my motherboard and the processor.

Yeah. I don't mind going for Xeon. But what difference does it make? Any idea? The price is double. Same cores. Lower clock speed. But I don't understand why it's double the price.

Xeons support EEC buffered RAM. Normal CPUs, even the 5820K, 5930K and 5960X, do not. That is pretty much the only difference (other than no overclocking on Xeons either).

I would go for X99 as Xeons are not great for a mainstream system tbh...... Go for a 5820k should do you nicely!!

Yeah. I don't think I require ECC Rams. Cores is what matters. But yeah.

The reason I wanted more cores was for an engineering application called ABAQUS. The more the cores, the faster it gives me the output. And 5820k only had 6 cores. But yeah.

Broadwell-E will have 8 core processors, likely around the 600-800 dollar mark.

So I guess the best option would be to wait for it and upgrade it then.

Yeah, I'd sit it out until Broadwell-E comes out.

I mean, do you need the extra power right now, or are you just looking to upgrade in the near future?

More cores on a Xeon that are compatible with Z97 is not there

The multiple core Xeon's only fit on X99 Motherboard.Which by then you should get something like a i7-5820K and a X99 Motherboard.

keep in mind buying X99 will cause you to have ram upgrade to DDR4.

Also higher multiple core xeon only take ECC memory and not to mention Xeons are ment for servers and such and does not have a boost clock

No don't wait for Broadwell-E

or Skylake-E

The thing is intel is not planning to make more then 4 physical cores in a consumer grade chip any time soon

Oh my. I totally forgot about the ram. Thanks for informing. That will be a lot of extra cost.
