i7-6700K or i5-4690K?

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Okay don't fight guys, let me figure this out. At PC Case Gear (one of Australia's most popular computer parts store) the i7 6700k is $519 and the i7 4790k is $515. So they cost about the same. Some games actually run better on i7's E.G. Fallout 4. You can also video render on them faster. Now, what I would consider is getting the i7 5820k for $579. $60 bucks more for more cores and way better for rending and maybe a little bit slower at gaming. Getting a good x99 motherboard for the i7 5820k would cost around $400. The Z170 motherboard whcih I have (The z170-ar) cost $249. The haswell motherboards probs cost way less than that. DDR4 is what skylake has and it would be good to have that because it will last longer and the prices will just keep going down.

Out of all this, I think the i7 6700k is the best middle spot. It is cooler and doesn't run as hot as the 4790k and is newer and has support for ddr4 memory.

Hey guys, can't decide between the two! here is some info:

Build I want (except CPU, dunno what I want for that):

OTHER INFO:

INFORMATION:

Budget: ~$2500 AUD

Location: Australia

Aim for system: Gaming, extended use, light recording/youtubing, and schoolwork, multiple monitors.

Monitors: I am already using two with my current build.

Resolution: 1920x1080p nothing more BUT want it to be a bit future proofed "capable of running 3,840x2,160"

Peripherals: Already have all of my needed peripherals :)

Water cooling or air:

AIR COOLING ONLY PLEASE!!

Reason for upgrade:
This pc needs a big dumping... I want to play games like GTA and Battlefield at high-Ultra video settings and I can't because my pc struggles with even minecraft at some stages...

So, I want to make a decision.
I could do with a 4690K because it is quite a lot cheaper in AUS and with that extra money I could possibly get a copy of windows.
BUT, I also do quite a bit of photoshopping and Cinema 4d Rendering, the render times doesn't really matter but I don't want the application to be laggy and unusable. So basically lag free editing and gaming. *rendering doesn't matter*

Thanks for your suggestions.

Or a i7 4790k and you could also get windows 10 for $35USD on Reddit.

No thanks, doesn't fit my mobo and why get a 4790K for like 2 dollars cheaper?

A 4690k doesn't fit your mobo either.

Wait, what? A 4690k and the 4790k use the exact same socket.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Yes but it's 200 bucks cheaper than the 6700K so it's actually a decent reason to change the MOBO

If you are starting out with a new build then my vote would be going for the 6700k. It is a Skylake i7 so you get the 4 cores and 8 threads for your editing plus it will let you sit pretty for another few years until it is time to upgrade again.

Since you want to air cool as well, the 6700k runs significantly cooler than the 4690k all while being more powerful. This is due to intel removing the integrated voltage regulator.

I build PCs as a hobby.

Guys, i7-4790K is out of option, it's literally a straight downgrade from the 6700K.... its like 5 dollars cheaper! I don't get why you would get it over the 6700K...

I have that mobo and it's great. ONe thing to note though, it only comes with 2 sata cables for your hard drive, ssd, or optical drive. So if you want to connect 3 things you'll have to get an extra sata cable.

Doesn't get that most of us aren't Australian and don't automatically know AUD prices for things.

An i7 4790k in the US is a good 100$ cheaper.

Why are you being so rude we are trying to help you here and like I said we don't all live in Australia so we don't know the prices over here a i7 4790k costs almost £80 (£80 = $164.70) less than a i7 6700k also an i7 4790k and i7 6700k isn't that much different power wise.

well now that the spam over the 4790K is somewhat seteked i think that the 6700K would be better, its cooler, newer and prefomes better then most other options. 4 cores with 8 threads should do you good for a while. also i have that exaxct wireless card in my PC and it wasent too happy runing on anything but the absolute top slot of my mobo and people have been having problems with it and windows 10 just a heads up for you

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

The 4790k is not a downgrade from a 6700k, it's a side step. The 4790k also won't bend because Intel went cheap on manufacturing it like they did with the 6700k. Google it.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

If you are straight up gaming, a 4690k would do just fine. However, a 6700k will be a safer bet if you think you'll want to do video editing, or other cpu bound tasks in the future, and games like Fallout 4 actually show a substantial fps increase on i7 vs i5. I would say, if you have the money, and are willing to pay for it, the 6700k would be a nice cpu.
