HDD Moved Components

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

no its fine

if something happened to it when you moved the PC then you would either get a crash or an error would have come up

Hi, so I moved my PC while it was on and I think my storage HDD was in the middle of something and I know that even the slightest "tick" off for the hard drive platter and or the needle can cause file errors so I just want to make sure that everything is okay with my data and my drive. I feel paranoid about this and it doesn't look like anything bad happened but I just want to be sure. Is there a way I can check if there are any errors?

Just to be clear though, it's still not a good idea to even move the PC let alone a hard drive while it's on right?

you can

just no fast twisting movements or banging the PC on stuff

laptops have hard drives in them, and they can be moved around no problem

I forgot about laptop hard drives *facepalm* thank you!

Better safe than sorry, but unless you were playing football with your PC, you should be more than fine.

Hey Yames :)

What's the drive's brand and model that you are worried about? I would simply get a diagnostic utility from the manufacturer's website and see if the drive passes all tests with no issues. If it does, the drive should be fine. :)
For more info you can get the raw values of the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status and post them here. We should bea ble to give you some additional info about the drive's condition.

Well a simple test with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic should give you a good answer if the drive is fine or not. I'd run both the quick and the extended tests. Do have in mind that the extended test takes quite a lot of time. :) Here's a link to the tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=YbJmXi

Post back with the results :)

SSD would have no problem with movements though right? Since it literally has no moving parts

yeah 0 problems

unless you hit and break it or something lol

The extended test check every single sector if it's readable or not and reports back. It is good to run such test every once in a while as you'd be able to catch drive errors earlier and would have more time to react.
@Enderman is right. SSDs are nearly unaffected by movement and you are not likely to damage them at all unless you physically hit them into something and break them. :)
