Yet another 'should I buy now or wait' question

HeathCliff

Going to keep this one simple.

For my upcoming project, I plan on getting triple 1440p monitor. The prime candidate was the ROG swift. Is it worth waiting for the price to drop on the PG279Q to £700 or just go with triple PG278Q's.

if you are going triple you do NOT want TN

the PG279Q is £731 on scan so its not exactly far off £700 anyway

Look at some korean monitors before you blow a chunk of cash on monitors with perks that are hardly worth the premium.

if you dont, dell has some really nice 1440p IPS panels around the 400 dollar mark.

we are years from OLED on desktops. OLED burns in, some less than others, but they all do a little bit. when a large portion of the displays life is displaying a similar image, those parts of the image that are common will burn in. things like the taskbar and that red X in the top right of your chrome tab will be visible on bright screens etc.

this isn't an issue on a phone or TV because those images are dynamic unless a significant portion of your TV viewing is the weather channel or TV guide, or you have the keyboard pulled up most of the time on your phone.

on a phone some burn in is barely noticable on bright or white screens after 2 or so years of use, mostly at the navigation bar, but a computer monitor that is kept on for more than 6 hours per day, and is probably expected to last more than 4 years, would show significant signs of burn in by the middle of it's life.

until OLED panels are much more stable, they will not be practical as a replacement for LCD technology on the desktop.

I don't think I could wait for an OLED 144Hz G-Sync/FreeSync monitor. My guess, it'll take about 1 or 2 years before thy hit the market.

I'm fully aware of the benefits, but when you consider the savings as well as my sh*tty monitor setup as of right now, it's very tempting. Hopefully boxing say will save me.

Not sure if you've ever tired G-Sync before, but it is fricking amazing. I'm not sure if those Korean monitors have it yet.

Oh I know about burn in, I run a Plasma 42" as my only VDU for my PC.

It doesn't burn in, unless u do something stupid like turn off the screens screen saver, the PC screen saver, and leave a high contrast static image on it over night.

If OLED is anything like the last of the Plasma's, u can live with the quirks of avoiding burn in, and its worth it for the image quality. I will never go LCD, if this plasma goes pop, ill buy a second hand one, or a CRT, cant stand LCD's.

But its gunna be some time b4 OLED is here unfortunately, manufactures are still milking the living hell out of LCD's.

Some do. Some don't. G-sync is good if your graphics card can't drive the monitor at its refresh rate in games. Nice if you have 144Hz, but surely not worth $500. (I paid 200 for mine - 27", 1440p, IPS. perfect.)

savings? its a waste of your money, especially since if you are running triple monitors you are going to need off axis viewing angles your side monitors will look HORRIBLE since they are not going to be straight on to you

Honestly I wouldn't even go for triple 1440p,but that's just my opinion, if you want wide id get a 1440p ultrawide, but too many games dont support triple or ultrawide I preger to just get a nice single 27" 1440p 144hz IPS

I plan on starting Project Depravity with the launch of Broadwell-E/Pascal. The reason why I'd like G-Sync is because I'm not really sure how much horsepower will be needed to drive triple 1440p monitors at ultra settings and if it does go sub-60, then I'll have it as a fallback. If not, All the FPS.

Triple 1440p is barely do-able on dual 290Xs. Even a couple of 980Tis with balls-to-the-wall overclocks will choke on anything other than CS:GO. And you can forget 144Hz.

Wait for the Fury X2 to come out and buy two of them :P

That's where another dilemma begins: G-Sync or FreeSync? Hopefully both vendors stick to a single platform, but I highly doubt it. As for my GPU choice, I jus have to hope I made the right choice in my monitors. I pray HBM will make higher resolutions for realistic.

a lot of "hopefully", I wouldn't bet on anything changing anytime soon, we arent suddenly going to get 4x more powerful graphics cards in 6 months

Why not just get a single highest end 1440p display? then you can run every game maxed out and not have to dick around with multimonitors

I genuinely need the real estate for my work and assignments. I just can't seem to get used to an ultrawide, which is why I'm going with the triple 1440p.

As for intensive games, I'm probably going to game on one for intensive games and use the other 2 for bs.

Then that makes sense, if the others are for work etc, why not get 2 cheaper 1440p panels, like my AOC Q2770PQU was like £350, and then get a completely baller center monitor for gaming

Although yes would be nice if they all matched but £2100 on 3 monitors is excessive :P
