Can you mix ram size and brand?

My friend gave me a spare stick of 8gb of 1600 mhz cl9 patriot memory. I have a stick of 4gb 1333 mhz cl9.

in theory yes, I personally don't recommend doing it though just to make it one less compatability issue that can spring up.

My desktop runs Corsair Vengeance and Crucial Ballistix low profile RAM, totalling 16GB. I haven't encountered a single issue with it.

My laptop, however, ran a brand whose name I forget, and right now it's running a stick of Kingston HyperX RAM. I had compatibility issues with both sticks in at the same time, which left me with no choice but to ditch the old RAM.

Make sure they have the same voltage, it would also be a good idea to get ram with the same CAS and frequency as some issues may come from timing issues if you moba isn't flexible.

 

I just avoid the hassle when buying by getting the same exact ram

i don't recommend doing that, but yes you can. and it will be better if you put aevery sinlge RAM stick on a diffrent channel if you have. and check the voltages, thisi really important. the timing isn't a big thing. and the clocks will be downgraded

While many people, myself included, don't recommend mixing and matching ram, it will work, although you might have issues during certain tasks.

 

TBH, you're better off with the single 8 gig stick
