Why not ask for like a fixed sum of moolah and top the rest up on your own? :D

Because for them its fun to actually buy stuff rather than just give me money. Its almost like the tables have turned, i used to open gifts and be super excited and joyful ( i still am now trust me) but now its more about them than me. like a complete flip flop you know?

Well maybe it's because the gifts are getting more and more expensive xD

Why not a storage upgrade or something? Something like an intel 750 series ssd xD

"With XFire, the Card can be a different model and generation as long as it has the same chip. You can XFire a HD 7950 with a R9 280(because they are the same chip) or you can XFire with the HD7970 with a R9 280X(same chip as well), but you cannot XFire a R9 290 with a R9 280X (correct but i use the 290 as the example)

The R9 290, R9 290x, R9 390 and R9 390x all use the same chip.(correct)"

But there is one info that you missed out

and that is VRAM size

for example the R9 290 4GB CF with the R9 390 8GB

you will only get 4GB because of mirroring.

the other 4GB on the 390 gets wasted

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

You are right. I forgot that the R9 390 series had 8GB of VRAM.

I crossfire a 290 and 390, great scaling and I use a 750w power supply with them both Overclocked. I do run the 290 at 1500mhz memory so as to match the 390. Great combo.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

So is a 390/290 crossfire worth it. I already have 1 290. this would be christmas, i literally have nothing to ask for so an extra gpu sounds good honestly.

For some games it's worth it. For others, it doesn't scale at all or can cause problems/performance degradation. Something I found out by trial and error running two 290's in crossfire. After running these for a while, I'm now considering selling both to go with a single, more powerful card.

I literally only play Arma 3. Pretty sure that will utilize both Gpu's but my i7-4770k literally maxes out at 50% usuage on the game anyway due to bad optimization so im not sure.

That game will not benefit from a 2nd GPU. It's severely CPU-bound and extremely optimized.

What I would suggest; take the money you would have spent on a 390, sell the 290 and combine that cash to get a 980Ti/Fury X (a single, more powerful card).

Don't get me wrong. When games can and do take advantage of the full performance scaling with crossfire 290's/390's, the performance is nothing short of blistering. I'm talking faster than a 980Ti. Unfortunately, that's not the case for a lot of the games out there.
