This is the best bang for the buck build with a bit cheaper GPU, I kept a black/white colour scheme so it also looks very nice:

(if he needs 8GB of VRAM you can go R9 390 instead, the 290X is a little faster, but it has 4GB, I don't think anyone needs that since 4GB is perfectly fine even for 1440p)

This build is for my cousin.  I am not an experienced builder but I believe this should be a simple rig to assemble (famous last words). I have a g910, g502, blue snowball, and 558's + a 144mhz TN Asus 24' I am giving him.  He can get a 4k for x-mas from his parents - not going there :)   Would love all feedback positive and negative and where I can improve or what I can add.  I am willing to go up to 1,500$

Get an EVGA G2 PSU.  ALso, why did you buy a laptop drive?  Switch it out with a WD Black or Blue.

Thanks, so you changed the PSU, CPU Cooler (why?), and Harddrive.

I considered long and hard about getting him a 980 ti but I am not gonna do it.

#1 reason that's my card so no way am I getting my 16 year old cus the same card as me

#2 He does not have a 4k monitor and primarily plays e-sports games (cs:go / dota 2) @ 1920 x 1080.

My research leads me to believe that going all in on a 980TI now, for someone not using multiple displays and even a 4k, it would be better to wait for the next gen gpu's.

The i7, mobo, and gpu came as a new egg bundle.  I felt safer going with that.  If I was more experienced or up-to-date I would know what to do.  After 72 hours of searching, researching, etc.. I burnt out and just bought the above.

I'll change the PSU, and the HD for sure.

Do you believe I should stick with the GPU I listed, or drop to an even lower card like the 960 to hold him over for 3-6 months.  He plays new titles every now and then but is a hardcore cs:go junkie.   144hz max settings csgo I think is all he cares about.

The i7 was my choice so it was not exclusively  a gaming rig.

Forgot to mention I only feel comfortable shopping at new egg (premier), amazon (prime), or the local best buy and walmart for their solid return policies and I have a long standing reputation with them.

+ Free shipping can't beat that

True, it's in the budget but I have rethought my approach.  If I spoil him with top of the line GPU now he will never know the struggle or appreciate it.

Going for a mid tier GPU here intentionally so he doesn't take it for granite when he gets the new ones in June?

Morgan Freeman, you are the man.

Was the GPU personal preference with the 290?  I am so far behind on GPU's.  I have not researched the new AMD cards as I already had upgraded to a 980ti before they were released.

The main complaint I hear about AMD GPU's is how loud they are.  My EVGA 980ti is extremely quiet.

This is my last question and I will gild you and begone.

Is that fractal case worth it (if the cards are a loud as the reviews say)?

Thanks again, my man, much love.

Is that fractal case worth it (if the cards are a loud as the reviews say)?

Thanks again, my man, much love.

No, the R9 290X is just very well priced right now, it's faster than a 390 and it's worth getting, I picked it myself cause I knew that :P

Yeah, that fractal design case is also good, though the H440 is silent and looks nice, I put a PC together with my own hands into one, a quality case if you asked me

The XFX R9 290X should be neither hot nor loud so you're fine, H440 also has silent pads inside so you can barely hear it running, you're good to go with that
