best windows version for gaming

what is the best version of windows for gaming. i have used xp all my life and then got windows 7 and like it but dont think it is efficient as windows 10 for gaming 

CPU: i5 4690k  (overclocked to 4.3ghz)             CPU Cooler: Cryorig h7                 MOBO:  Msi Z97 pc mate             RAM: 8GB HyperX 1600 blue

GPU: rx480  4gb                                                 CASE: Corsair Spec-01 red              OS: Windows 10

PSU: EVGA 500   watt                                       SSD:    v60gb Mushkin ssd                HDD: 1000GB WD BLUE

Windows 10 is better than 7 or 8

Windows 10 does seem to slightly improve performance on my main rig, but I have noticed that gaming on my Pentium computer is slower than 7 on GTA V (and yes I do know that a dual-core isn't exactly recommended for GTA V) since Windows 10 adds some more background processes.

If we are talking purely numbers here, then 8/8.1 and 10 are slightly better than 7 and Vista (by less than 5%) in benchmarks due to their lower overhead. 10 is better than 8.1 in the future because of DX12 support which won't impact performance for a while but will make a very large difference when games begin using it.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

Windows 8/8.1 had an edge over 7 with some improvements "under the hood" that were greatly overlooked by the Start Menu.

Then 10 has access to DX12, and also WDDM 2.0 (which I'm surprised nobody mentioned yet).

So technically, Windows 10. If you don't feel like getting 10 for whatever reason, then 8.1 would be a better choice (support will outlast 7)
