So I'm taking my first foray into overclocking my graphics card.  Before I've always just ran them as they come out of the box.  I've discovered that furmark is useless for stability testing.  I got my 780 to 1246 MHz without increasing voltage in furmark, but it crashed before even getting to the main menu when launching a game (Tomb Raider in this case).

I've also tried using Cinebench's OpenGL test, but that doesn't load up the card much, it only runs in the 7xx MHz range during the test.

Is there any stand alone software thats good for testing graphics stability?  Or is my best bet just to run a game and alt tab over and play with graphics settings?

I do have 2 monitors, so I can monitor all the specs while I have something running full screen.  Using GPUTweak for overclocking.

Games are the best stability tests in my opinion. Use a graphically intesive game like Tomb Raider, Metro: Last Light, Metro 2033, Crysis 3 or Far Cry 3 (there are more the this). Run the game for 1-2 houre. 3Dmark can also be used if you set it on a loop, but it tends to pass unstable overclocks

Is heaven a free bench mark or part of the paid Futuremark stuff?

Its free: http://unigine.com/products/heaven/

You just need to basic version

I would either run this a couple of times or just game on it to test whether your gpu is stable.

One thing i will add that other people havent, you will find that different game engines will allow for different oc's on your gpu for example, with my 770 lightning i can get +75 on the core for a total boost of 1333mhz and usually get an average of +300 on the memory however crysis 3 i have to reduce the mem clock to +150 and core clock to +65 for a boost of 1306mhz.. there are a  few other games that i have varied settings for but if you wanna squeeze every last frame from all your games maybe consider having multiple profiles for multiple games :) also note my gpu has over volting ability so you wont necessarily get anywhere near the boost speeds i do

thanks for the tip

as far as the overvolting thing, I'll take comfort in the fact that I have a 780 to your 770 :D /trolling :D

haha ill have 3 of them soon ;)

well... maybe... I'll get a second 780...

no, I won't... you win...  :(

but really? 3?  isn't that 3rd one almost useless?  especially on a Z77 board with the limited pcie lanes and stuff?  or does yours have a PLX chip?
