So im building a new computer and im asking for the parts for Christmas

My plan to build a new computer is im going to take the CPU (i7 4770) , the ram (8 GB) and the 1TB hard drive out of my current computer and put it into a new system. I've checked that the motherboard im buying is a LGA1150 so the CPU will fit. The rest of the parts that im going to buy new are as follows:

  • Corsair C70 Case (Black)
  • 980 Ti Gigabyte Windforce (GV-N98TWF3OC-6GD)
  • Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1
  • WD Black 1TB

So i have three questions:

  • Does this build look good?
  • What voltage do i need for a power supply? (i was thinking about  800 because of the power hungry 980 ti)
  • In your opinion do i need an optical drive?

Heres the questions for a plan:

Budget?

Anywhere below 1500.

Aim?

To play high end games on at least high (Im not planing on overclocking my cpu)

Monitors?

2 x 1080p

Peripherals?

I have all the peripherals i need but i will need to buy windows

Why?

My Graphics card is outdated and i cant upgrade it since i have an alienware

EDIT: Changed my mind. Going to get a 980 Strix.

well....how good it looks depends on how you put it together and cable manage everything

and btw power supplies only work on 100v to 240v

an 800V power supply will not work connected to a home's power outlet lol

Well all you really need is a new GPU, you can either get a case that allows for longer graphics cards or just get a smaller card

and ya, you should just save money and get a Fury or 980 for the longer card, a 980ti is more a card to run in SLI for 4k, otherwise it's far too overkill for 1080p, either of the less expensive cards can handle ultra settings at 1080p and will for some time, and even at 4k a single 980ti is hardly faster than a Fury or 980, certainly not worth the cost difference

or get a 390 with a Free-sync display, performance wise it's not really there maybe with DX12 it'll keep up with a stock 980 better, but you have a much smoother gaming experience, and actually right now, you can get a 1440p 144hz Free-sync display for $300, it's on a crazy sale and it has the full free-sync range

My suggestion otherwise if that 1440p display isn't on sale, 1080p 144hz TN, there's also a 21:9 IPS display for the same price if color accuracy is more your thing

Thank you so much for the advice!

Yeah i think im going to go for a 980 Strix and in the future get a better display.

So my final build is:

i7 4770 (stock cooler)

C70 Case

Asus Z-97-A

GTX 980 Strix

Corsair cs850m

8GB DDR3

2x 1TB WD

total cost: about $900

Thank you again for the advice!

(just as i side note since i wanted to really future proof this build my plans for upgrading in the coming years is to upgrade the cpu and the cpu cooler for overclocking and more ram)

I'd still suggest a Fury over a 980, mainly because free-sync saves 100 dollars or more compared to G-sync, and because AMD cards potentially have better DX12 support in the long term

You also have to OC the 980 a good amount to keep up with the non X Fury

Ya I dunno I'd rather save money on the display in the future, plus like nvidia hates freedom, but with a hefty OC it can compete well with a Fury, though the Fury just got it's voltage unlocked finally so it can OC potentially a bit better, not sure how many people have tested it now
