Is i7-6700k any good along with ASUS Maximus VIII Hero?

I'm planning on upgrading my processor and motherboard to i7-6700k and ASUS Maximus VIII Hero, but I am not sure if this is a good way to go as I want this to be sort of future proof.

If it is bad any good recommendations

Well for gaming it's pretty much the best CPU right now.

Although the motherboard doesn't really affect performance or future proofness.

Try pair it with some 3000 mhz or so RAM, it does help things a small amount.

Anyway, if you want future proof, the 6700k is the best you're going to get.

I'm replying to this thread on my desktop which uses an Intel Core i7 6700K and an ASUS Maximus VIII Hero. I can promise you that this is a very solid combination, though an i7 6700 is good too. The motherboard will have all the features you could dream of: 2-way SLI/CF at 8x, M.2, Z170 chipset, plenty of fan headers, water pump header, fancy lights, DDR4, it's got it all (except wifi). As for RAM, don't go overkill. I run 16 GB at 2666 MHz which is plenty, but you could very easily get away with 8 GB with modern games. Speed shouldn't be a concern either, with the difference between high speeds and low speeds being 1 FPS (within the margin of error) as shown here:

Have fun!

Oh yeah, I should mention, that motherboard you picked out is pretty overkill, you'll get along just as well on boards 70% it's price. Such as the Asus z170-Pro or the Asus Z170-A

Have fun!

On the Skylake flatform, higher speed RAM has been show to make a minor difference, and in some rare cases, performance has sky rocketed with faster RAM, such as with Fallout 4 and Ryse Getting about a 35% frame increase from faster RAM alone.

For the small price premium of faster RAM, there's not much reason against it.

I'm pretty much going for overkill on my motherboard as the one I have now is like ancient, around 7-9 years ago.

and TeRaByTeFrEnZy what is your graphic card? I am currently using AMD radeon R9 200 series

I don't see the logic in that at all. But if it makes you happy, then it's worth it.

I'm rocking the MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G. Sexy card with excellent copper cooling. Temperatures are excellent, and it overclocks very nicely (+200 on core, +550 on mem).
