I have a pretty good idea already but I want to reach out for more minds.

In a thread earlier I posted a possible build with an i7 4790k, and someone suggested changing it to a i5 6600k, for updated performance.

The 4790k has a higher clock speed but is not as up-to-date, how does the 6600k perform in comparison?

And is there anything else I should know in my decision?

rather stick with i7 4790k, also do discuss on that thread instead of creating a new thread.

The 4790K has a higher clock speed, and hyperthreading.

The 6600K has support for faster DDR4 RAM.

Get the 4790K.

I would personally rather have the i7 4790K for the extra $60 over the 6600K.  Raw single core performance has improved a bit with Skylake, but the i5 does not have the thread assistance that HT provides on the i7.  For gaming the 4790K will be plenty fast for just as long as the 6600K would be.  Grab some DDR3 2400MHz RAM and Skylake does not seem as beneficial.

Thank you. This is quite helpful.

The platform and your specific use cases are the far more critical choice. If all you're ever going to do with this is play games and not utilize the additional PCIe lanes Z170 boards provide for something like a 950 M.2 SSD, there is no point in Skylake over Haswell.

Read this http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/462341-skylake-haswell-e-pcie-lane-misconception/ for a more detailed explanation of the platform changes.

If you do want to utilize the extra PCIe headroom/feature sets that come standard on Z170 boards, and only as premium additions to Z97 boards (USB 3.1, M.2 compatibility, etc.) then you should consider Skylake/Z170 as a viable alternative. i5 vs i7 for gaming is not a critical issue at this point in time, maybe when DX12 is fully standardized across all new releases Hyper Threading will be a more important factor, but by that time both Haswell and Skylake will have been long gone.
