Should I look to trade my R9 390 for a GTX 970?

The driver update did little to improve the 390, it did help the Fury though. Crimson looks to be an improvement of the UI, not anything to help game performance.

Crimson turns it all into like a Geforce Experience, where you download all the drivers there instead of going to AMD's website to download them. I think. Probably?

 

It's also replacing the Gaming Evolved app, so all the fancy recording and stuff you do with the software will show up in one place. I think. There was a Netlinked Daily on it.

It was never worth it to swap from a 970 to 390 or 390 to 970.
