I am looking to replace my old (i7 920 2.67GHz  - AMD Radean 6950)  gaming PC with the following:

I am looking to stay in the US $1200 - 1300 range without a monitor or peripherals.  Any thoughts would be appreciated as it has been awhile since I built a PC.

Thanks

Just curious why you mixed two different types of memory. The CPU probably won't need the Noctua cooler because it is a locked chip, and you can put the 74 dollars towards a 390X

That Xeon is just an i7 4770 with no iGPU, it's better than the locked i5 you had.

390X is just better in every way.

I don't think you'd need an 850 Pro, so I swapped it with an 850 EVO.

Changed the CPU cooler, since you don't need an NH-D14 for a locked CPU.

Swapped PSU for a different one.

This PC is better than the one you posted. I think the only thing would be that it's Haswell instead of Skylake, so a CPU upgrade would require a mobo swap (but by the time you upgrade from the Xeon Cannonlake will probably be out.)

Since you are not overclocking (That processor is locked), you can go for a H170 chipset instead of the Z170. Might save a few bucks there if you'd like.

Also, no need to go for the Samsung 850 Pro SSD unless you really need the added reliability/warranty. The 850 EVO offers very good performance at a lower price.

Lastly, get a better PSU if possible. Look at EVGA's offerings (GQ, GS, G2, P2 are all excellent). 650 watts should be sufficient for any single-gpu rig. Hope that helps a bit.

EDIT: just realized you have 32gb of mixed memory? I assume that's a mistake, 16gb should be way more than enough.

seriously overkill CPU cooler, and FAR too much ram 1 (or even half of one) of those 2 kits is plenty (850W PSU is only there if you want to get a second GPU in the future, otherwise a EVGA GS 650W will do just fine).

Thank you for the answer.   So the processor is locked and this is not dependent on the mobo?  I will be going with the EVO based on yours and others recommendations and change the power supply.  Thanks again for the help

So the processor is locked and this is not dependent on the mobo?

More or less. The only Intel processors that can be overclocked are the ones with a "k" suffix at the end, i.e. i7-4790k, i5-6600k, i7-6700k, etc. If you don't think you'll need to OC, then you can save a decent amount of money by going with a locked, non-k, processor.

As for the chipset choice, Z170 is the only OC-ing compatible chipset that works with the skylake processors. But obviously, if you have a locked processor, there is no advantage of going for the Z170 chipset (unless the model you have chosen offers something in particular). H170 offers all of the same features as Z170, minus the ability the OC. B150/H110 are also compatible chipsets. H110 is usually more of a budget chipset, B150 is aimed at business users, but is usually the same as H170.
