A question about AIOs

Go to solution Solved by W-L,

We all know that mixing metals in a loop is bad, but why does an AIO have a copper block mixed with an aluminium radiator?

They have a mixed metal loop to save money for the radiator since copper and brass costs more money than aluminum, they use a compatible mixed metal fluid to ensure no galvanic corrosion occurs.

The fluid inside of it most likely has additive that resolves that issue.

How effective are anti corrosive additives to galvanic corrosion?

The ones they use in AIO's are pretty good stuff, usually a mix of biocides  and anti-corrosives similarto antifreeze used in cars which are dissimilar metal loops. There are compatible watercooling fluids that can work in mixed metal loops also but it's best to avoid them all together.
