MSI R9 390 two psu cables or one y-cable?

im_matt
I recently build my first PC. Everything went great and it worked on the first try.

However, when I was building I came across and issue.

I have the EVGA SuperNova 650 G2 psu and the MSI R9 390 gpu.

The R9 390 requires one 6 pin and one 8 pin connector for power.

The psu provides two connectors on the psu itself for gpus. The cables that have to be plugged into the psu are y-shaped.

At the psu end they have one 8 pin connector which splits into a 6+2 and 6 pin connector at the gpu end.

I've got the gpu connected with one cable as described above, but is this the right way to do it? Or should I use two cables?

In both cases all the pins on the gpu are connected.

I've searched quite a bit on the internet for an answer, but couldn't really find a clear answer.

Thanks :)

I would suggest you have both connectors plugged into the GPU, this just allows for easier power draw and will be much easier for the card.

Got a single 8 + 8 pin cable powering my 390x. Should be fine for you.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

As long as it's a good PSU then it will be able to cope.

It's not a race to the bottom.

I haven't had any issues so far (a few days). No weird frame drops, screen flicker or anything.

So, guess I'm all good like this?
