So initally I wanted to buy a R9 390x but then I saw that is 100GBP more expensive than the gtx 970 and is similar in performance. Plus I've heard that most games are better nvidia optimised. So 390x or GTX 970?

I'd go for the 390 instead of the 390x. More or less the same price as the GTX 970 and has more performance.

I love my 970, been overclocking it a lot lately, still playing with the bios for more voltage.

The 390x outperforms the 970 by miles which is why it's £100 more. A better comparison would be the 390x vs the GTX 980, in which the 390x would win. For your case though, an R9 390 (no x) would be better.

I'm pretty worried that my PSU might melt. I have a Corsaor 700w PSU. Will it be enough? Also, many games are nvidia optimised and amd gpus get crap fps on these games. Is the 390/390x still worth it?

What is with the fear and power supplies lol? You're fine, 700w is overkill. A 390 pulls under 350w at full load.

Don't waste money on a 390x. It's barely faster but cost a lot more. 390 is the sweet spot. If you absolutely need more power go with a Fury.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I haven't seen a 390 yet that could hang with my 970s.  The 8GB 290X is another story though.

If I were buying a GPU today, it'd be either the Sapphire or XFX 8GB 290X.

It's pretty funny how my 780 performs somewhat similar to the 970 in these synthetic benchmarks yet in most modern titles the Kepler Architecture is struggling to keep up with a 960/970. Well they did fix the Witcher 3 day 1 release issue... well I hope so, never saw a benchmark comparison of old drivers vs new drivers for Witcher 3 on the Kepler cards.

Your 970s are pretty ridiculous lol, no doubt about that. If I ever replace my 290 with a 390 though I'm coming for you. (Don't worry, happy with the 290 ;) )

It mostly will depend on your display resolution. I'm surprised no one has even asked yet.  (Well, no. No I'm not. This is linustechtips.)

So here it is:  What is your display resolution?

If you're at 1080p you won't need 8GB of video memory.  I have 6GB and GTA5 doesn't even use 4GB with all settings maxed at 1080p.

So, since the 970 is cheaper, if that's your resolution, save some money and don't bother with the 390 or 390x.

Can you take a screenshot of your VRAM usage? I find it interesting it's not using atleast 4GB VRAM with all settings maxed out at 1080p.

That's the most I can seem to get out of it. I've only logged like 2 hours in playtime, so some of these settings my eyes don't even notice.
